Time Sense

Time plays a decisive role in a student’s life. Now-a-days many students waste their time in useless pursuits particularly in the beginning of an academic year. Later when exams are near they complain that they don’t have sufficient time to complete their portions. This points to their lack of clear thinking about value of time. This booklet “Time Sense” deals with these problems and shows a way to solve them. Besides dealing with the subject of time management this booklet also contains a section on how a student can make use of the practice of prayer to enhance his self-confidence and concentration.

Plotinus (c.205-70) was a Neoplatonist philosopher, his work posthumously published by Porphyry and divided into six books, nine tractates each, called the Enneads. In this book Majumdar makes a valuable addition to the literature on his work, especially Ennead III.7(45)11-13 - in particular explaining Plotinus' cosmology using the genus-species model of soul, coordinating the literature on the appearance of time and the cosmos with that on the larger issue of Plotinian "emanation" and examining the role of tolma and the restless nature of soul in this conjoint appearance. The role of cognition and emotion in perceiving time is also explored, as well as questions derived from time experience in daily life, such as why time seems to pass more quickly in one situation rather than another. Classical and modern research on timing in children is reviewed, as well as work on time perception and time experience in older people. Leading recent models of animal timing are also discussed in a non-mathematical way.
