Towards A Different Transcendence

This collection of papers brings together feminist theologians, philosophers and literary critics from Europe, the United States and Australia. It aims to explore the claim made by feminist thinkers that women need a 'house of language' of their own and different forms of transcendence to express their subjectivity and the values they want to live by. In their discussion of this claim this international group of authors uses a variety of sources and theoretical approaches, from novels by Woolf and Morrison to feminist philosophers such as Irigaray and Kristeva, from Daly and Ruether to speculative fiction and pornographic writing, from Italian feminist thinkers to postcolonial theory. Despite this variety the book presents a consistent argument for a 'house of language' which is open to the ongoing dialogue about values we want to live by, as well as an example of this dialogue.

This book demonstrates how Heidegger's departure from ontotheology occurs initially as a preparation for the concept of Dasein's transcendence and subsequently as its explicit development and overcoming. Dasein's transcendence is revealed as the foundation for the subsequent concept of Beyng as an Event, which stands in contrast to all ontotheological perspectives that assert a singular a priori foundation of the universe attributed to beings, God, consciousness, or even an independent "process" of Being that doesn't rely on Dasein. The book illustrates that transcendence is not an attribute of human consciousness or a connection to something external to it. Instead, as a "primal act," transcendence paves the way for a non-representational dwelling in the essence of a historically unfolding Being, a contemplative recollection of the truth of Beyng. Throughout the book, there is a gradual progression towards an understanding of transcendence as an active engagement, wherein we "do" transcendence. This process involves a reconstruction of the ontological significance of action, emphasizing its performative embeddedness in existence and its inseparability from Beyng.

What can transcendence mean for us? We live in a world in which there are many conceptions of transcendence. Some philosophers say that they all point, in their way, to a transcendent realm, without which death and life's sorrows have the last word, while their opponents argue that since this realm is an illusion, we must use our own resources to meet life's trials. Others argue that moral and religious concepts of transcendence are obscured by philosophical notions of transcendence, and must be rescued from them. These conflicting views on a central issue in our culture are brought into sharp relief in the present collection.
