Ten years ago, the U.N. and the U.S. enacted laws and treaties against human trafficking. Since then, the international community has witnessed tangible progress in the effort to end the scourge of trafficking in persons. Countries that once denied the existence of human trafficking now work to identify victims and help them overcome the trauma of modern slavery, as well as hold responsible those who enslave others. This Report outlines the continuing challenges across the globe, It highlights several key trends, including the suffering of women and children in involuntary domestic servitude, the challenges and successes in identifying and protecting victims, and the need to include anti-trafficking policies in our response to natural disasters. The 2020 UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons is the fifth of its kind mandated by the General Assembly through the 2010 United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. It covers more than 130 countries and provides an overview of patterns and flows of trafficking in persons at global, regional and national levels, based primarily on trafficking cases detected between 2017 and 2019. As UNODC has been systematically collecting data on trafficking in persons for more than a decade, trend information is presented for a broad range of indicators.

This report looks at instances of trafficking in persons (TIP) in Latin America. It looks at current legislation in the U.S. to combat this problem.

The UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2016 is the third of its kind mandated by the United Nations General Assembly. In July 2010, the UNGA adopted the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. The Report covers and provides an overview of patterns and flows of trafficking in persons at the global, regional and national levels, based on trafficking cases detected mainly between 2012 and 2014. It looks at links between trafficking in persons, migration and conflict, and how refugees may be particularly vulnerable to being trafficked. The worldwide response to trafficking in persons, particularly in terms of criminalization and prosecution of trafficking crimes, is also a focus of this edition of the Global Report. The Department of State is required by law to submit each year to the U.S. Congress a report on foreign governments' efforts to eliminate severe forms of trafficking in persons. This is the 11th annual TIP Report; it seeks to increase global awareness of the human trafficking phenomenon by shedding new light on various facets of the problem and highlighting shared and individual efforts of the international community, and to encourage foreign governments to take effective action against all forms of trafficking in persons. The United States' Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA), as amended, guides efforts to combat human trafficking. The purpose of the law is to punish traffickers, protect victims, and prevent trafficking from occurring. Freeing victims from this form of modern-day slavery is the ultimate goal of this report -- and of the U.S. Government's anti-human trafficking policy. The TVPA outlines minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking in persons. Countries that do not make significant efforts to comply with the minimum standards receive a Tier 3 ranking in this report.
