Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1921-1922 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Seventh and Thirty-Eight Annual Meetings: At New Haven, February 15 and 16, 1921, and New Haven, February 21 and 22, 1922 The Secretary notified me just recently that it would be necessary for me to make an address before the Society here, and I asked him particularly what he wanted me to say. He reminded me of the story that I had heard somewhere about someone who had compiled an address and intended to read it in the usual manner. He said it should be similar to a woman's skirt - short enough to retain inter est, long enough to cover the subject. I told the Secretary I didn't think an address from me would help in any way and I would like to signify my intention of continuing my interest in the Society, but I. Don't think there is anything that tires one so as being chosen to lead, no matter how poor that leadership may be. It certainly creates an interest to one in the Society, and I hope you may all have the pleasure of being appointed some time. Excerpt from Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, Vol. 8: 1878-79 The volume opens with a report of our Seventh Annual Assembly, which, it will be seen, was in every way a success its only drawback being the unavoidable absence of the Chief. After it we had a large accession to our membership, and the Society was meeting with the utmost encouragement when the country was overtaken by the financial disasters which have, for some time past, so much engrossed the public mind. As might naturally be expected that, combined with a winter of unprecedented severity, interfered to a considerable degree with the number and success of our meetings during the first half of the session. As Wisconsin’s population moved from farmsteads into villages, towns, and cities, the state saw a growing interest in gardening as a leisure activity and source of civic pride. In Vintage Wisconsin Gardens, Lee Somerville introduces readers to the region’s ornamental gardens of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, showcasing the “vernacular” gardens created by landscaping enthusiasts for their own use and pleasure. The Wisconsin State Horticultural Society, established during the mid-nineteenth century, was the primary source of advice for home gardeners. Through carefully selected excerpts from WSHS articles, Somerville shares the excitement of these gardeners as they traded cultivation and design knowledge and explored the possibilities of their avocation. Women were frequent presenters at the WSHS annual meetings, and their voices resonate. Their writings, and those of their male colleagues, are a remarkable legacy we can draw on today—learning how Wisconsinites past created and enjoyed their gardens helps us appreciate our own. Filled with period and contemporary images, recommended plant lists, and garden layouts, Vintage Wisconsin Gardens will interest those curious about the history of the state’s cultural landscape and inspire readers to restore or reconstruct period gardens.

Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1915 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Annual Meeting at New Haven, February 15 and 16, 1916 Following the suggestion which former President Crandall made in his address last winter, viz.: that the society Should have more frequent meetings for the purpose of giving the mem bers a better Opportunity to get acquainted, we have held smokers at each of the following cities: New Haven, Hartford, New London, New Britain, and Bridgeport. The average attendance at these gatherings has been fifty. N 0 special effort was made to make these meetings instructive, the principal object being to make and renew acquaintances. Everyone was tagged with his name, the tag serving a double purpose, first for identification, and incidentally for the benefit of those who might temporarily forget themselves, or be afraid to go home in the dark. My suggestion to the incoming president is that the larger cities be encouraged to form local branches of the society, and that each branch hold an occasional smoker or give an entertain ment for all members of the society who can attend. Such a movement will relieve the president and secretary of a great amount of work and tend to create a greater interest, and I believe will result In a decided increase in membership. At these meetings, and more especially at the annual banquets, a half hour Should be devoted by the officers to receiving members, particular attention being paid to the younger men. I hope the programme of the future banquets will Show just when and where such receptions will be held. Our summer meeting and clambake was held at North Bran ford, at the headquarters of the New Haven trap rock quarries.
