We are in a frenetic and a convoluted digital age. Every organisation strives to transform its business to stay competitive in this exponentially growing digital world. Digital transformation became pervasive and ubiquitous in all business ventures. This new norm of constant transformation requires architecting our business and underlying technology stacks rapidly. Establishing agile business architecture frameworks are fundamental requirements to achieve successful digital transformation outcomes. In this book, I attempt to share my knowledge and experience using a rigorous yet agile architectural method. My aim is to add accelerated value to the broader business architecture and digital transformation communities by focusing on the practical aspect with minimal emphasis on the theoretical aspect. The content in this book is based on my architectural thought leadership experience gained in multiple large business and enterprise architecture initiatives, focusing on business capabilities, digital transformation initiatives, and enterprise modernisation engagements, reflecting hard lessons learned in these applied settings. In this book I attempt to redefine the role of business architects as primary leaders for digital transformation programs. The content reflects my experience and observations from the field. As a caveat, this book is not based on theories in the traditional business architecture textbooks which may conflict with my experience. Business transformation typically involves a wide range of visualisation techniques, from the templates and diagrams used by managers to make better strategic choices, to the experience maps used by designers to understand customer needs, the technical models used by architects to propose possible solutions, and the pictorial representations used by change managers to engage stakeholder groups in dialogue. Up until now these approaches have always been dealt with in isolation, in the literature as well as in practice. This is surprising, because although they can look very different, and tend to be produced by distinct groups of people, they are all modelling different aspects of the same thing. Visualising Business Transformation draws them together for the first time into a coherent whole, so that readers from any background can expand their repertoire and understand the context and rationale for each technique across the transformation lifecycle. In the west coast port city of Gothenburg, Sweden, the architect Gunnar Asplund built a modest extension to an old courthouse on the main square (1934–36). Judged today to be one of the finest works of modern architecture, the courthouse extension was immediately the object of a negative newspaper campaign led by one of the most noted editors of the day, Torgny Segerstedt. Famous for his determined opposition to National Socialism, he also took a principled stand against the undermining of urban tradition in Gothenburg. Gothenburg’s problems with modern public architecture, though clamorous and publicized throughout Sweden, were by no means unique. In Gunnar Asplund’s Gothenburg, Nicholas Adams places Asplund’s building in the wider context of public architecture between the wars, setting the originality and sensitivity of Asplund’s conception against the political and architectural struggles of the 1930s. Today, looking at the building in the broadest of contexts, we can appreciate the richness of this exquisite work of architecture.
