Grounded in cutting-edge knowledge about cognitive function and recovery from brain injury, this practical reference and text builds on the authors' influential earlier work, Optimizing Cognitive Rehabilitation. It incorporates major advances in the field to provide a new framework for assessing patients and developing individualized rehabilitation plans. The distinguished authors present principles and procedures for promoting engagement, teaching cognitive strategies and discrete facts and routines, introducing external cognitive aids, and supporting patients' social competence. Additional topics include considerations for using computer-based training, managing functional cognitive symptoms, and providing cognitive rehabilitation in the inpatient setting. The book features detailed case illustrations and filled-out examples of 19 reproducible planning and progress monitoring forms. Blank forms can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.

"This text reflects the changing contexts of cognitive rehabilitation practice, increased recognition of the multitude of psychological and somatic factors that affect cognitive function, and the emergence of novel theories that inform and guide clinical practice. Chapter 1 introduces five paradigms that serve as the context for cognitive rehabilitation today. In Chapter 2, we review key cognitive functions typically affected by acquired brain damage. Chapter 3 introduces the concept of "psychological mindedness" and provides counseling frameworks and strategies that can be incorporated in cognitive rehabilitation sessions to promote client engagement and motivation. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System, a framework to describe and classify our treatments. Chapter 5 further builds on the Planning, Implementation, Evaluation framework. The remaining chapters apply the principles and frameworks to instruction in the use of cognitive strategies (Chapter 7) and external cognitive aids (Chapter 8), teaching discrete facts and routines (Chapter 6), and methods to support social competence after brain injury (Chapter 9). Other topics are rehabilitation in the inpatient setting (Chapter 10); a review of the current state of computer-based, drill-focused cognitive rehabilitation (Chapter 11); and cognitive rehabilitation for clients with functional cognitive symptoms (Chapter 12)"--

Sohlberg and Mateer's landmark introductory text helped put cognitive rehabilitation on the map for a generation of clinicians, researchers, educators, and students. The second edition reflects advances in neuroscience and computer technology, coupled with changes in service delivery models. The authors describe a broad range of clinical interventions for assisting persons with acquired cognitive impairments--including deficits in attention, memory, executive functions, and communication--and for managing associated emotional and behavioral issues. For each approach, theoretical underpinnings are reviewed in depth and clinical protocols delineated. Difficult concepts are explained in a clear, straightforward fashion, with realistic case examples bringing the material to life. Also included are samples of relevant assessment instruments, rating scales, and patient handouts. Throughout, the volume emphasizes the need to work from a community perspective, providing a framework for forming collaborative partnerships with families and caregivers. It is an essential resource for professionals across a wide variety of rehabilitation specialties.
