Egor, in his late 20s, prepares to embark on a whirlwind journey that will see him traveling halfway across the world to see his family for the first time in over 23 years, including a reunion with his estranged Father Alik that his Mother Alena did her best to take him away from. She practically kidnaps Egor from Alik all those years ago. Seated on the plane as it prepares to take off, Egor begins to reminiscence his childhood. From the day he was born in Soviet Ukraine, a big family surrounded him. Along the way, he and other family members from his mothers side recount their struggles in fleeing the former USSR as refugees, after Chernobyl catastrophe struck in 1986. Constantly in transit, Egors family have found themselves at most turbulent time in history the late 1980s, as the family goes through refugee processes in Austria, next - in Italy, where theyre facing hardships, and on the way injustice. After almost a year of being in constant transit, Egors family finally arrive in Australia. There in a foreign land - down under Egor and his family have started a new life from scratch.

"The purpose of this synthesis was to document the state of the practice of integration between land- and water-based transit systems and to explore successful aspects of seamless integration. The report assembles and presents information in numerous locations around the United States, supplemented with examples from Canada, Australia, and Bermuda. To accomplish this effort a literature review was undertaken that received limited results. However, a selected survey of 46 respondents out of 57 transit and ferry agencies, as well as agencies and companies in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, including Bermuda, received an 80% response rate. The respondents represent a geographically representative sample--varying in size and age of system, degree of coordination between ferry and transit, and type of community served. The synthesis summarizes findings from 60 different ferry-to-land-based transit interfaces. Case examples of key factors of land- and water-based integration are offered for Long Wharf in Boston, Massachusetts; TransLink's SeaBus in Vancouver, British Columbia; New York Waterway's Hoboken Terminal; and Washington State Ferries and Kitsap Transit in Bremerton, Washington. Tim Payne, Danielle Rose, and Hazel Scher, Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates, Inc., Seattle, Washington, collected and synthesized the information and wrote the report, under the guidance of a panel of experts in the subject area. The members of the topic panel are acknowledged on the preceding page. This synthesis is an immediately useful document that records the practices that were acceptable within the limitations of the knowledge available at the time of its preparation. With the increasing sophistication of urban rail networks, the combined effects of rail transit on urban development are more and more complex and in-depth, and large-scale rail transit construction and operation have placed new demands on planning, construction, investment and financing. This main aim of these proceedings is to study and explore theoretical progress, methodological innovation and lessons learned in aspects of the planning stage, urban planning, architectural design, development and construction, safety systems, management support, etc. involved in the process of comprehensive utilization along urban rail transit lines and in the development and utilization of the surrounding land, in order to provide a platform for decision-makers and researchers involved in urban rail transit construction, urban construction and development.

This book shows how transit assignment models can be used to describe and predict the patterns of network patronage in public transport systems. It provides a fundamental technical tool that can be employed in the process of designing, implementing and evaluating measures and/or policies to improve the current state of transport systems within given financial, technical and social constraints. The book offers a unique methodological contribution to the field of transit assignment because, moving beyond “traditional” models, it describes more evolved variants that can reproduce:• intermodal networks with high- and low-frequency services;• realistic behavioural hypotheses underpinning route choice;• time dependency in frequency-based models; and• assumptions about the knowledge that users have of network conditionsthat are consistent with the present and future level of information that intelligent transport systems (ITS) can provide. The book also considers the practical perspective of practitioners and public transport operators who need to model and manage transit systems; for example, the role of ITS is explained with regard to their potential in data collection for modelling purposes and validation techniques, as well as with regard to the additional data on network patronage and passengers’ preferences that influences the network-management and control strategies implemented. In addition, it explains how the different aspects of network operations can be incorporated in traditional models and identifies the advantages and disadvantages of doing so. Lastly, the book provides practical information on state-of-the-art implementations of the different models and the commercial packages that are currently available for transit modelling. Showcasing original work done under the aegis of the COST Action TU1004 (TransITS), the book provides a broad readership, ranging from Master and PhD students to researchers and from policy makers to practitioners, with a comprehensive tool for understanding transit assignment models.
