This volume explores Australian and New Zealand experiences of translation and interpreting (T&I), with a special focus on the formative impact of geocultural contexts. Through the critical lenses of practitioners, scholars and related professionals working in and on these two countries, the contributors seek a better understanding of T&I practices and discourses in this richly multilingual and multicultural region. Building on recent work in translation and interpreting studies that extends attention to sites outside of Europe and the Americas, this volume considers the geocultural and geopolitical factors that have helped shape T&I in these Pacific neighbours, especially how the practices and conceptualization of T&I have been closely tied with immigration. Contributors examine the significant role T&I plays in everyday communication across varied sectors, including education, health, business, and legal contexts, as well as in crisis situations, cultural and creative settings, and initiatives to revitalize Indigenous languages. This collection takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of gendered technology, an emerging area of inquiry that draws on a range of fields to explore how technology is designed and used in a way that reinforces or challenges gender norms and inequalities. The volume explores different perspectives on the impact of technology on gender relations through specific cases of translation and interpreting technologies. In particular, the book considers the slow response of legal frameworks in dealing with the rise of language-based technologies, especially machine translation and large language models, and their impacts on individual and collective rights. Part I introduces the study of gendered technologies at this intersection of legal and translation and interpreting research, before moving into case studies of specific technologies. The cases explored in Parts II and III discuss the impact of interpreting and translation technologies on language professionals, language communities, and gender inequalities, while stressing the future needs of gendered technology, particularly machine translation. The Australian national association for the translating and interpreting profession, AUSIT, has been organising biennial conferences for the last decade. As they steadily grew in quality and importance, the time to share their proceedings with a global readership has arrived. For the first time, AUSIT is releasing in book format the proceedings of its latest conference, held in November 2010 with the slogan “Synergise!” Presentations from an international gathering of speakers are collected in this volume, grouped into five chapters and addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of cross-cultural communication, the training of future practitioners, and a wide range of specific circumstances influencing the day-to-day work of translators and interpreters – including the business side of managing a professional practice. The hallmark of the conference was the balance it achieved between academic interest and professional reality, between research and detailed practice, between theory and the exigencies of translators’ and interpreters’ lives. The synergies achieved were much more than the simple sum of the components.
