This book presents the application of new techniques in analyzing truss and frame structures. The book contains two main sections: Numerical Analysis of Structures and Mass-Saving in Structures. Under each section, different approaches on the topic are given. Covered in these sections are dynamic stability analysis, design optimization considering vibration, FEM analysis, topology optimization methods, and recommendations to build lightweight structures. It is believed that this book will be helpful to its readers for new perspectives on the analysis of structures.

This book is concerned with the static and dynamic analysis of structures. Specifi cally, it uses the stiffness formulated matrix methods for use on computers to tackle some of the fundamental problems facing engineers in structural mechanics. This is done by covering the Mechanics of Structures, its rephrasing in terms of the Matrix Methods, and then their Computational implementation, all within a cohesivesetting. Although this book is designed primarily as a text for use at the upper-undergraduate and beginning graduate level, many practicing structural engineers will find it useful as a reference and self-study guide. Several dozen books on structural mechanics and as many on matrix methods are currently available. A natural question to ask is why another text? An odd devel opment has occurred in engineering in recent years that can serve as a backdrop to why this book was written. With the widespread availability and use of comput ers, today's engineers have on their desk tops an analysis capability undreamt of by previous generations. However, the ever increasing quality and range of capabilities of commercially available software packages has divided the engineering profession into two groups: a small group of specialist program writers that know the ins and outs of the coding, algorithms, and solution strategies; and a much larger group of practicing engineers who use the programs. It is possible for this latter group to use this enormous power without really knowing anything of its source.

This book contains 72 schemes of statically determinate trusses, detailing the analytical dependencies of the deflection on the loads, dimensions and the number of panels for each of them. It specifically focuses on cantilever trusses, frames and arched trusses, among which it is possible to separately distinguish trusses with externally hidden dangerous properties. The book is intended both for practical engineers and for theorists of structural mechanics. The compact and easily reproducible formulas provided here can be used as a test and reliable addition to numerical calculations. These formulas are especially effective for trusses with a large number of panels, where numerical calculations either give inaccuracies or require considerable counting time. Schemes that allow instantaneous variability will warn the practical engineer about an error at the design stage when choosing the number of truss panels.

A comprehensive book that covers all aspects of timber framing and hewn log construction. The book covers information on design, tree selection, tool selection, hewing, and framing. The author sequentially guides the builder through the process, revealing various options for every aspect of framing. The book is profusely illustrated, relying on pictures to convey the process. Whether one wishes to learn how to hew a timber, cut mortise and tenon joinery, create a King post truss or raise a timber frame by hand or with a crane, it is covered in this book.
