This book addresses itself to two major problems: the increasing demand for water and the increasing limitations on energy use. Within the general framework of problems regarding pumps and pumping installations, attention is focussed on variable-speed pumps. The book considers all aspects of pumps and pumping systems theory. The first four chapters cover the theory of pump operation and control, and with the phenomenon of cavitation. The next three chapters treat the computations and operation of a pumping system in both continuous and discontinuous flow conditions, as well as the computation methods and control of water hammer by means of automatic hydraulic valves. Chapters 8 to 13 deal with the theory and structure of automatically controlled pumps, and with the speed regulation systems of the electric motors driving the pumps. The last chapter analyses optimal schemes for fixed- and variable-speed pump installations for various typical applications and gives associated operation diagrams. Throughout the book, numerous tables and diagrams support the written text.

This book provides users, pump manufactures, engineers, researchers and students with extensive information about pump’s behavior in reverse operation. It reports on cutting-edge methods for selecting the proper PAT and improving PAT’s efficiency, discusses PAT’s reliability, economic issues and environmental impact as well. The book describes in detail electromechanical equipment of PAT systems, their installation and operation, and gives important practical insight into the use of PAT in water transmission and distribution systems, as part of thermal power plants and cooling systems, in oil distribution systems and other systems as well. It reports on different types on PAT control modes as well as on numerical methods useful for PAT analysis and implementation. All in all, the book represents a comprehensive practice-oriented reference-guide to design engineers, as well as PAT general users and manufactures. It also provides researchers with extensive technical information on the use of PAT thus fostering new discussions and ideas to improve current methods and cope with future challenges.

The engineer designing a fluid system has to decide how flow is to be provided, which almost invariably means deciding what type and size pump is necessary to overcome the system resistance to flow. In chosing a pump for a given application, the engineer must also define the duty, the type of materials to be used, and how the pump is to be driven. An Introductory Guide to Pumps and Pumping Systems is designed to give an understanding of the types of pumps available, their operating principles, and the way they interact, along with the necessary background to enable the engineer to assess information from the manufacturers and to make useful contribution to technical discussions. The approach used assumes some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics, but deals with all the essential equations in context, and it is intended that the information, while concise, is complete enough for the engineer. An Introductory Guide to Pumps and Pumping Systems can be strongly recommended to practising engineers and technicians in industry, to design engineers and those responsible for specifying plant, to consultants, researchers, teachers, and students.
