Excerpt from Twenty-Five Years Reminiscences OF my father I desire to speak without a word of mourning. It is now seven years since he died, and I no longer feel it a profane thing to think of him or to speak of him as he was. His was so strong a personality, so living, that the note of mourning seems out of place. Somewhere he goes on living Still, intensely human, simple, robust, great-hearted, kind. In whatever position of life he might have been born, he would always have been unlike his fellows. He was born to the country pursuits. Although the actual place of his birth was an old Dublin street under the shadow of Dublin Castle walls, practically from the beginning his business and his place were with flocks and herds, in the rich fields lying south westward of Dublin, under the beautiful mild hills. Excerpt from Twenty-Five Years in British Guiana How much do we not owe to the many diaries and'. Reminiscences written by Englishmen and Frenchmen during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries? So, despite Mrs. Oliphant's strictures, and disregarding the fact that some indolent reviewers, if they condescend to notice this book, may put me down as a garrulous and vain old man, I shall proceed to write down my Recollections of British Guiana as it was during my connection with the colony from 1872 to -in the hope that my readers, gentle or otherwise, may find something therein both to amuse and instruct them. Excerpt from Creighton University: Reminiscences of the First Twenty-Five Years The scope of this work requires us to go further back than the year which marked the beginning of the College; for in no other way can the circumstances and difficulties, attending its opening and progress be properly measured. Hence, a preliminary account of the settlement of Nebraska and of the early condition of the Church in Omaha and its vicinity, becomes necessary. A contrast is needful to enable us to appreciate the re markable achievements of a quarter of a century. Society was exceedingly crude, even long after Nebraska had become a State; education was at a low ebb; opportunities of every kind were lim ited; and the wonder is that our people and institutions so soon outgrew those conditions and developed so marvelously within the memory of men still in the prime of life. Whenever possible, I have preferred to let documents tell their own story and have given the preference to the narrations of those who were eye-witnesses of the events and knew person ally the circumstances about which they speak.
