BLACK POWER! It was a phrase that consumed the American imagination in the 1960s and 70s and inspired a new agenda for black freedom. Dynamic and transformational, the black power movement embodied more than media stereotypes of gun-toting, dashiki-wearing black radicals; the movement opened new paths to equality through political and economic empowerment. In Harambee City, Nishani Frazier chronicles the rise and fall of black power within the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) by exploring the powerful influence of the Cleveland CORE chapter. Frazier explores the ways that black Clevelanders began to espouse black power ideals including black institution building, self-help, and self-defense. These ideals challenged CORE’s philosophy of interracial brotherhood and nonviolent direct action, spawning ideological ambiguities in the Cleveland chapter. Later, as Cleveland CORE members rose to national prominence in the organization, they advocated an open embrace of black power and encouraged national CORE to develop a notion of black community uplift that emphasized economic populism over political engagement. Not surprisingly, these new empowerment strategies found acceptance in Cleveland. By providing an understanding of the tensions between black power and the mainstream civil rights movement as they manifested themselves as both local and national forces, Harambee City sheds new light on how CORE became one of the most dynamic civil rights organizations in the black power era.

This book explores the key role that place and location play in the operation of the labour market at a time when local context is becoming an integral part of the design and implementation of labour market policies.

Human capital and organizational capital are increasingly important as a source of value in many firms. But even as this is happening, organizational forms and employment relationships appear to be changing in ways that reduce loyalty and commitment and encourage mobility on the part of employees. Are these changes consistent in ways that contradict traditional theory and wisdom, or is the corporate sector getting a temporary boost in earnings by restructuring and cutting payrolls; but failing to make necessary new investments in human capital? The essays in this book provide intriguing new evidence on these questions. This book is dedicated to strategic management research relating to China’s SOE. As China’s economic system of the day is featured by mixed ownership, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), under the New Normal of economic backdrop, are devoted to exploring the reform of stock resources reorganization, one of which is through mergers and acquisitions (M&A). This book explores the key points and difficulties in the successful reform of Chinese enterprises with mixed ownership by focusing on trust and innovation and by widely covering normative research, index evaluation system, game theory and empirical research with case study. It is significant for evaluating the reform of SOE in China by integrating the informal institutional aspects into the formal one and understanding the leading role of SOE in China’s economic development.

Russell Long (1918-2003) occupies a unique niche in twentieth-century United States history. Born into Louisiana’s most influential political family, and son of perhaps the most famous Louisianan of all time, Long extended the political power generated by other members of his family and attained heights of power unknown to his predecessors, including his father, Huey. The Long family and its followers pervaded Louisiana politics from the late 1920s through the 1980s. Being a Long—especially a son of Huey Long—preordained Russell for a political life. His father’s assassination set the wheels in motion for his eventual political career. In 1948, Russell followed his father and his mother to a seat in the United States Senate. In due course, he rose to the politically eminent positions of majority whip and chair of the Senate Finance Committee. Russell Long: A Life in Politics examines Long’s public life and places it within the context of twentieth-century Louisiana, southern, and national politics. In Louisiana, Long’s politics arose out of the Longite/ Anti-Longite period of history. Yet he transcended many of those two groups’ factional squabbles. In the national realm, Long’s politics exhibited a working philosophy that straddled the boundaries between New Deal liberalism and southern conservatism. By the time of his retirement in early 1987, he had witnessed the demise of one political paradigm—the New Deal liberal consensus—and the creation of one dominated by a new style of conservatism.
