Preparing for adoption makes Ty and Chase realize that the ties that bind them together are forged in a love that can never be taken away. Feeling like she failed to fulfill her promise, Nathan reflected on ideas she and others have perpetuated about education: that college is for all, that hard work and determination are enough to get you through, that America is a land of equality. In When Grit Isn’t Enough, Nathan investigates five assumptions that inform our ideas about education today, revealing how these beliefs mask systemic inequity. Seeing a rift between these false promises and the lived experiences of her students, she argues that it is time for educators to face these uncomfortable issues head-on and explores how educators can better serve all students, increase college retention rates, and develop alternatives to college that don’t disadvantage students on the basis of race or income. Drawing on the voices of BAA alumni whose stories provide a window through which to view urban education today, When Grit Isn’t Enough helps imagine greater purposes for schooling.

This book presents selected papers from the international symposium on "Gene Manipulation and Expression" held in the Bechyne Castle, in South Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, on September 3 to 7, 1984. The symposium was sponsored by Academician J. Riman, vicepresident of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sci ences and director of the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, and by corresponding member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences Prof. V. Krumphanzl, president of the Czechoslovak Society for Microbiology and director of the Institute of Microbiology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, with Dr. K. Mikulik of the same Institute acting as chairman of the Organizing Committee. The book is divided into four parts entitled: (l) Rearrangement of prokaryotic genetic material and DNA cloning vectors; (2) DNA-Dependent RNA polymerase in prokaryotes: structure and function; (3) The role of cAMP in gene expression; (4) Translational control of gene expression. Knowledge of cholesterol and its interaction with protein molecules is of fundamental importance in both animal and human biology. This book contains 22 chapters, dealing in depth with structural and functional aspects of the currently known and extremely diverse unrelated families of cholesterol-binding and cholesterol transport proteins. By drawing together this range of topics the Editor has attempted to correlate this broad field of study for the first time. Technical aspects are given considerable emphasis, particularly in relation cholesterol reporter molecules and to the isolation and study of membrane cholesterol- and sphingomyelin-rich "raft" domains. Cell biological, biochemical and clinical topics are included in this book, which serve to emphasize the acknowledged and important benefits to be gained from the study of cholesterol and cholesterol-binding proteins within the biomedical sciences and the involvement of cholesterol in several clinical disorders. It is hoped that by presenting this topic in this integrated manner that an appreciation of the fact that there is much more that needs to be taken into account, studied and understood than the widely discussed "bad and good cholesterol" associated, respectively, with the low- and high-density lipoproteins, LDL and HDL.
