Uller Uprising Annotated

With the publication of this novel, Uller Uprising, all of H. Beam Piper's previously published science fiction is now available in Ace editions. Uller Uprising was first published in 1952 in a Twayne Science Fiction Triplet--a hardbound collection of three thematically connected novels. (The other two were Judith Merril's Daughters of Earth and Fletcher Pratt's The Long View.) A year later it appeared in the February and March issues of Space Science Fiction, edited by Lester Del Rey.

Uller is a corporate world where the natives (silicon humanoids with four arms and a face like a lizard) are ruled by Terro-Human Company. Natives, who outnumber humans, but aren't as advanced, have had it up with the imperialist Company and start a rebellion which will see many dead on both sides.

The story of a confrontation between a human overlord and alien servants, with an ironic twist at the end. Like most of Piper's best work, Uller Uprising is modeled after an actual event in human history; in this case the Sepoy Mutiny -- though not a mere retelling of the Indian Mutiny, but rather an analysis of an historical event applied to a similar situation in the far future

Uller Uprising By H. Beam Piper Uller Uprising is a story about the past repeating itself and past events having a direct effect on the future. Piper based the story on the Sepoy Mutiny. A trading company like the East India Trading Company of the 18th century has been established on Uller. Local officials rule and the humans profit and also try to help better the lives of the locals. Not all of the natives are pleased with this arrangement and a rebellion begins. It is up to Captain Carlos and his men to save the Chartered Company and the Terran Federation. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. The Terro-Human Future History series tells a story spanning 6,000 years of human future history following the development of atomic power and a planetary war. So the Ulleran challenge begins, with the rantings of a prophet and a seemingly incidental street riot. Only when a dose of poison lands in the governor-general's whiskey does it become clear that the "geeks" have had it up to their double-lidded eyeballs with the imperialist Terran Federation's Chartered Uller Company. Then, overnight, war is everywhere. How it will end is in the (merely) two Terran hands of the new governor-general, a man shrewd enough to know that "it is easier to banish a habit of thought than a piece of knowledge." The problem is, the particular piece of knowledge he needs hasn't been used in 450 years....
