Ultrasound Guided Liver Surgery

Ultrasound guidance of liver surgery is a very sophisticated approach that permits the performance of otherwise unfeasible operations, discloses the true extent of tumors, increases the indications for hepatectomy, and renders surgery safer. Despite this, it has remained relatively neglected in the literature over the past two decades, during which time much progress has been achieved. This is the first atlas on the subject, and it is comprehensive in scope. The state of the art in the use of ultrasound for resection guidance is carefully documented, and new techniques for exploration of the biliary tract and facilitation of transplant surgery are presented. Further important topics include the role of ultrasound in laparoscopic approaches, the use of contrast agents for diagnosis and staging, and developments in the planning of surgical strategy. The editor is a leading authority whose group has been responsible for a variety of advances in the field. He has brought together other experts whose aim throughout is to provide clear information and guidance on the optimal use of ultrasound when performing liver surgery. This atlas is intended especially for hepatobiliary surgeons but will also be of considerable value for general surgeons.

Edited by two preeminent leaders in the use of ultrasound in surgical practice, this volume is a state-of-the-art guide to preoperative and intraoperative applications of ultrasound. The book familiarizes surgeons with current equipment, scanning techniques, and interventional instrumentation and provides detailed instruction on diagnostic and interventional ultrasound for specific surgical diseases in each anatomic region. A major portion of the book focuses on intraoperative, laparoscopic, and endoscopic ultrasound in abdominal organs. Coverage also includes ultrasound in trauma and acute care settings. Hundreds of ultrasound images complement the text. Line drawings are used to clarify the images where necessary.

In 1983 and 1984, I had the pleasure of being invited to Europe for the Cour se of Hepatobiliary Surgery started by Professor Hepp and continued by Pro fessor Bismuth. In these courses, I demonstrated many slides and movies of intraoperative echography that Makuuchi, one of my staff members, had made using the transducer that he was the first to develop. The topic of Intraoperative Echography had an enormous impact on the audience, and its use has since spread rapidly over the European countries, by virtue of the first Italian edition of Professor Gozzetti's book on Intra operative Echography and Professor Bismuth's monograph on the same top ic. I had been, therefore, unwittingly a very fortunate transmitter of intra operative echography to Europe by means of Makuuchi's slide file. I am extremely honoured that the Italian Edition written by Gozzetti, Maz ziotti and Bolondi has been dedicated to me. Also in this English Edition, Professor Gozzetti very kindly asked me to write a few words. It is an extra ordinary pleasure for me to emphasize how this book is easy to read and understand, maybe by virtue of the profound Italian tradition of artistic expression since the Renaissance. On the other hand, a variety of series of intraoperative echographic images as well as resected specimens are arranged in an excellent manner.

The review discusses minimally invasive liver surgery, including laparoscopic ALPPS, HCC treatment, ultrasound guidance, ICG-guided procedures, and robotic hepatectomy.

Abdominal Ultrasound for Surgeons provides a comprehensive guide to the use of ultrasonography in surgical practice of abdominal diseases. The content is divided into three major sections, with the final section being dedicated to the logistics of incorporating ultrasound into a surgical practice. In Part III : Ultrasound in Surgical Practice, the practical aspects of incorporation of ultrasound into a surgical practice are addressed with topics ranging from credentialing to coding and billing. Abdominal Ultrasound for Surgeons will serve as a very useful resource and guide for surgeons and students with little to some experience in ultrasound, including practicing surgeons, surgical fellows and surgical residents.

The 7th International Conference on Medical Imaging and Computer Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2004, was held in Saint-Malo, Brittany, France at the “Palais du Grand Large” conference center, September 26–29, 2004. IRISA is a publicly funded national research laboratory with a sta? of 370,including150full-timeresearchscientistsorteachingresearchscientistsand 115 postgraduate students. INRIA, the CNRS, and the University of Rennes 1 are all partners in this mixed research unit, and all three organizations were helpful in supporting MICCAI. MICCAI has become a premier international conference with in-depth - pers on the multidisciplinary ?elds of medical image computing, comput- assisted intervention and medical robotics. The conference brings together cl- icians, biological scientists, computer scientists, engineers, physicists and other researchers and o?ers them a forum to exchange ideas in these exciting and rapidly growing ?elds. The impact of MICCAI increases each year and the quality and quantity of submitted papers this year was very impressive. We received a record 516 full submissions (8 pages in length) and 101 short communications (2 pages) from 36 di?erent countries and 5 continents (see ?gures below). All submissions were reviewed by up to 4 external reviewers from the Scienti?c Review C- mittee and a primary reviewer from the Program Committee. All reviews were then considered by the MICCAI 2004 Program Committee, resulting in the acceptance of 235 full papers and 33 short communications.
