These two volumes present a conspectus of current research on the history and culture of early medieval Spain and Portugal, from the time of the Arab conquest in 711 up to the fall of the caliphate. They trace the impact of Islamisation on the pre-existing Roman and Visigothic political and social structures, the continuing interaction between Christian and Muslim, and describe the particular development and characteristics of Muslim Spain- al-Andalus. Together, they comprise 38 articles, of which 32 have been translated into English specially for this publication. The first volume focuses on political and social history, and looks in detail at settlement patterns and urbanisation; the second examines questions of language and covers the brilliant cultural and intellectual history of the period.

Written by a female Middle East expert, Bradt’s Saudi Arabia is the first English-language travel guide from a mainstream publisher that focuses exclusively on the Kingdom, which has now opened for general tourism as part of rapid political, economic and social reforms. With detailed advice on what to see and do, listings for accommodation and restaurants, guidance on cultural etiquette and advice for women and other diverse travellers, this book provides the practical information adventurous tourists need to explore this new, exciting destination. Saudi Arabia will appeal to adventure travellers, offering activities ranging from pristine, world-class scuba diving to mountain-trekking. With dramatic scenery including a desert that stretches for hundreds of kilometres (where you can camp like a Bedouin) and several accessible nature reserves, visitors looking for undisturbed landscapes are spoilt for choice. Culture vultures will appreciate pre-Islamic rock art, Nabatean heritage, Mada’in Saleh (the sister city to Jordan’s Petra in Jordan) and six UNESCO World Heritage Sites rarely visited by international tourists. Particularly after sundown, when Saudi Arabia truly comes alive, urbanites can explore the cities of Riyadh and Jeddah, where shopping opportunities range from traditional souqs to top-end malls where the wealthy go to see and be seen. Gastronomists can enjoy varied cuisine, from fine dining worthy of a Michelin star to traditional meals served on the floor, shared by all and eaten by hand. This guide dispels misinformation by providing an unbiased, up-to-date and comprehensive resource that accurately reflects what Saudi Arabia now offers visitors from all backgrounds. Most outsiders know little about the Kingdom other than from typically negative media coverage, so may be pleasantly surprised at its rich history and youthful population eager to extend hospitality to guests respecting their culture and traditions. A comprehensive guide combining detailed travel information about the entire Kingdom (from the Northern Borders to Asir, and from Hejaz to Eastern Province) with a chapter explaining some of the main practices of and reasons for the hajj and umrah pilgrimages, plus contextual insights covering cultural etiquette, reforms and women travellers, Bradt’s Saudi Arabia is the perfect companion for people who thrive on off-the-beaten-path travel.

The Akhbār majmū‘a, or 'Collected Accounts', deal with the Muslim conquest of the Iberian peninsula in 711 and subsequent events in al-Andalus, down to and including the reign of ‘Abd al-Rahmān III (912-961), founder of the Umayyad caliphate of al-Andalus . No Arabic text dealing with the early history of al-Andalus has aroused more controversy, and its contents and origin have occupied the attention of leading scholars of Islamic Spain since its publication in 1867. This book gives the first complete English translation of this key contemporary text, together with notes, comments, appendices and maps. It is introduced by a survey of scholarly opinion on the text from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century in which all the - often heated - arguments around the text are explained. The translator concludes his introduction with an in-depth examination of the manuscript containing the only surviving copy of the text and presents some interesting new evidence provided by scribe which has gone unnoticed until now. Providing new insights into this significant Arabic text, this book will be of great interest to scholars of the history of Spain and Portugal, Islamic history, and Mediaeval European history.

The last decades have witnessed a major resurgence of interest in the Arabic grammatical tradition. Many of the issues on which previous scholarship focused - for example, foreign influences on the beginnings of grammatical activity, and the existence of grammatical "schools" - have been revisited, and new areas of research have been opened up, particularly in relation to terminology, the analytical methods of the grammarians, and the interrelatedness between grammar and other fields such as the study of the Qur'an, exegesis and logic. As a result, not only has the centrality of the Arabic grammatical tradition to Arab culture as a whole become an established fact, but also the fields of general and historical linguistics have finally come to realize the importance of Arabic grammar as one of the major linguistic traditions of the world. The sixteen studies included in this volume have been chosen to highlight the themes which occupy modern scholarship and the problems which face it; while the introductory essay analyses these themes within the wider context of early Islamic activity in philology as well as related areas of religious studies and philosophy.

"'Umar bin Khattab is one of the great Companions of the Prophet and second Caliph of Islam. He was so firm in his practice of Islam that he usually could sense what was right or wrong before the Prophet had informed others of it. He used to say to this friends: if a mule stumbles near the Euphrates River, I fear being questioned by Allah as to why I had not paved the road for it. This book sheds light on the life and struggle of the greatest example of a just ruler. We should follow his footsteps to maintain justice in every walk of our life." -- Back of book.

We are delighted to introduce the proceedings of the 3rd International Colloquium on Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies. It is annual event hosted and organised by the Graduate School of State Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. It was fully 2 days event 20-21 October 2020 by Virtual (online) mode with 3 keynotes speakers: Prof. Abdel Aziz Moenadil from the University of Ibn Thufail, Maroko, Prof Wael Aly Sayyed from the University of Ain Syams, Cairo, Mesir, and Assoc. Prof. Aria Nakissa, Ph.D. from Harvard University. The proceeding consisted of 41 accepted papers from the total of 81 submission papers. The proceeding consisted of 6 main areas of Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies. They are: Islam and medicine, Islam and Science and Technology, Islam and Psychology, Islam and Education, Quran and Hadits, and Islamic Studies with other various aspects. All papers have been scrutinized by a panel of reviewers who provide critical comments and corrections, and thereafter contributed to the improvement of the quality of the papers. Research in Islamic studies and Muslim societies today also increasingly uses interdisciplinary methods and approaches. In order to produce more objective findings, the researchers looked at the need to combine several methods or approaches to an object of study, so that they had additional considerations needed. These additional considerations add a more comprehensive perspective. In this way, in turn they can come up with better findings. Interdisciplinary Islamic studies dispute that Islam is monolithic, militaristic, and primarily Middle Eastern. We strongly believe that ICIIS conference has become a good forum for all researcher, developers, practitioners, scholars, policy makers, especially post graduate students to discuss their understandings of current processes and findings, as well as to look at possibilities for setting-up new trends in SDG and Islamic Interdisciplinary Studies. We also expect that the future ICIIS conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume.
