In this book, the necessary background for understanding viscoelasticity is covered; both the continuum and microstructure approaches to modelling viscoelastic materials are discussed, since neither approach alone is sufficient.

This book presents an introduction to viscoelasticity, in particular, to the theories of dilute polymer solutions and dilute suspensions of rigid particles in viscous and incompressible fluids. These theories are important, not just because they apply to practical problems of industrial interest, but because they form a solid theoretical base upon which mathematical techniques can be built, from which more complex theories can be constructed, to better mimic material behaviour. The emphasis of this book is not on the voluminous current topical research, but on the necessary tools to understand viscoelasticity. This is a compact book for a first year graduate course in viscoelasticity and modelling of viscoelastic multiphase fluids. The Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) is introduced as a particle-based method, relevant in modelling of complex-structured fluids. All the basic ideas in DPD are reviewed. The third edition has been updated and expanded with new results in the meso-scale modelling, links between the fluid modelling to its physical parameters and new matlab programs illustrating the modelling. Particle-based modelling techniques for complex-structure fluids are added together with some sample programs. A solution manual to the problems is included.

The emphasis is not on the voluminous current topical research, but on the necessary tools to understand viscoelasticity at a first year graduate level. The main aim is to provide a still compact book, sufficient at the level of first year graduate course for those who wish to understand viscoelasticity and to embark in modeling of viscoelastic multiphase fluids. To this end, a new chapter on Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) was introduced which is relevant to model complex-structured fluids. All the basic ideas in DPD are reviewed, with some sample problems to illustrate the methodology.

Applications of Viscoelasticity: Bituminous Materials Characterization and Modeling starts with an introduction to the theory of viscoelasticity, emphasizing its importance to various applications in material characterization and modeling. It next looks at constitutive viscoelastic functions, outlines basic equations for different loading conditions, and introduces the Boltzmann superposition principle, relaxation modulus, and creep compliance. Mechanical models, including integer-order and fractional-order are studied next, featuring real experimentation data alongside the benefits and drawbacks of using each model in various real-world scenarios. The book then covers the correspondence principle, followed by time–temperature superposition, featuring a simple procedure to construct a real master curve and challenges that might be encountered. The concluding chapters cover the Hopkins and Hamming, Park and Kim, and General Power law methods for interconversion of constitutive viscoelastic functions, applications of viscoelasticity for experimental tests, and incremental form of viscoelastic relations for numerical modeling. The book also includes supplementary codes that users can duplicate and use in their own work. Takes an applied approach to material viscoelasticity, explaining complicated viscoelastic equations and principles Presents examples of those equations and principles being applied to common problems in realworld settings Covers constitutive viscoelastic functions, including relaxation modulus and creep compliance Outlines the construction of a master curve of viscoelastic material considering time–temperature superposition Couples the correspondence principle with common viscoelastic experiments, such as threepoint bending beam, axial and torsional bar, and dynamic shear rheometer Provides supplementary codes

Engineering Viscoelasticity covers all aspects of the thermo- mechanical response of viscoelastic substances that a practitioner in the field of viscoelasticity would need to design experiments, interpret test data, develop stress-strain models, perform stress analyses, design structural components, and carry out research work. The material in each chapter is developed from the elementary to the esoteric, providing the background in mathematics and mechanics that are central to understanding the subject matter being presented. This book also examines how viscoelastic materials respond to the application of loads, and provides practical guidelines to use them in the design of commercial, military and industrial applications.

Viscoelasticity is a complicated theorem that is generally used in several aspects of material characterization and modeling of polymers, resins, fiber-reinforced composites, bituminous composites, etc. On the other hand, the heterogeneous nature of composites like asphalt concrete and fiber-reinforced polymers has motivated lots of researchers to investigate the mechanical and rheological properties of these materials. This book mainly consists of the theory and application of viscoelastic materials used for construction. It starts with a comprehensible presentation of the theory of linear and nonlinear viscoelasticity. Wherein, the application of viscoelastic equations and principles on constructional viscoelastic composite materials considering time, temperature, loading rate dependency, and heterogeneity of composite substances is highlighted. The principles and equations of the viscoelasticity theorem are presented in several books, but here it is tried to present them more understandable and straightforwardly. This helps in solving real problems of heterogeneous composite materials, especially those which are used in construction. Moreover, the fundamental experiments for characterizing the elastic and viscoelastic properties of fibrous and bituminous composites are introduced and summarized. Then after, some analytical and empirical formulations for deriving the material properties of composites from the properties of the basic constituents are presented. These are followed by numerical simulation techniques using the finite element method to simulate composite materials.

A revised molecular approach to a classic on viscoelasticbehavior Because viscoelasticity affects the properties, appearance, processing, and performance of polymers such as rubber, plastic, and adhesives, a proper utilization of such polymers requires aclear understanding of viscoelastic behavior. Now in its third edition, Introduction to Polymer Viscoelasticityremains a classic in the literature of molecular viscoelasticity, bridging the gap between primers on polymer science and advancedresearch-level monographs. Assuming a molecular, rather than amechanical approach, the text provides a strong grounding in thefundamental concepts, detailed derivations, and particularattention to assumptions, simplifications, and limitations. This Third Edition has been entirely revised and updated to reflectrecent developments in the field. New chapters include: * Phenomenological Treatment of Viscoelasticity * Viscoelastic Models * Time-Temperature Correspondence * Transitions and Relaxation in Polymers * Elasticity of Rubbery Networks * Dielectric and NMR Methods With detailed explanations, corresponding equations, andexperimental methods, supported by real-life applications (as wellas the inclusion of a CD-ROM with data to support the exercises),this Third Edition provides today's students and professionals withthe tools they need to create polymers with more desirablequalities than ever.
