Whether drawn from the majestic river as it courses to the sea or from a reservoir on the hilltop, through the arteries of mains beneath the city streets the water is carried into the homes to purify and strengthen. Excerpt from University of Ottawa Review, Vol. 14: 1911-1912 Very Reverend Rector, Reverend Gentlemen of the Faculty, Ladies and Gentlemen: feel as that man must have felt who, sitting in the lowest place, was called to come up higher. Proud and flattered as I am he must have been; and yet I am sure his step faltered as he walked upwards and speech to him was difficult when he tried to give ex pression to his gratitude for the kindly invitation. A man would have to have a fine conceit of himself who could without embarrassment join the distinguish ed circle of men who have received degrees from this university - men who in church and state, in divinity and law and medicine, in the great profession of teaching the arts and sciences that make for human advancement and human betterment, have shed such a lustre upon the University of Ottawa. Excerpt from University of Ottawa Review It is necessary to be prepared for severe, uninterrupted, life long competition. It is necessary to do more than to learn one's language, French or English, or even both. It is necessary to go on steadily from elements to rhetoric, and thence to the key stone of all education, Philosophy, which is supposed to terminate a proper collegiate course, but which is but the beginning of a life of study, to end only with one's existence. Facts sre said to be everything, but a knowledge of facts is of little value unless they may be compared with others. And how can comparisons be safely made. And how can facts be fitted into their proper places and have their proper value, without a knowledge of the rules whereby they may be located and their value estimated P The man who knows ten million facts, and has them stored away in a most retentive memory, to be thrown at us like isolated texts of Scripture, without their contexts and without their bearings, may yet be an uneducated man, while another, who may not know half a dozen facts, but who knows their value and bearing, may be an educated man. Hunters at the Margin examines the conflict in the Northwest Territories between Native hunters and conservationists over three big game species: the wood bison, the muskox, and the caribou. John Sandlos argues that the introduction of game regulations, national parks, and game sanctuaries was central to the assertion of state authority over the traditional hunting cultures of the Dene and Inuit. His archival research undermines the assumption that conservationists were motivated solely by enlightened preservationism, revealing instead that commercial interests were integral to wildlife management in Canada.

Until recently, immigration policy was largely in the hands of a small group of bureaucrats, who strove desperately to fend off "offensive" peoples. Barbara Roberts explores these government officials, showing how they not only kept the doors closed but also managed to find a way to get rid of some of those who managed to break through their carefully guarded barriers. Robert's important book explores a dark history with an honest and objective style. Published in English.
