Utah's Canyon Country Place Names documents more than 4,000 place name derivations and place name changes over time. It also includes stories and early descriptions about those places, often told by the first explorers or the early pioneers who settled there. Details are provided about hundreds of historic roads, trails, railroads, and highways, as well as major cowboy line camps, towns that have disappeared, and water sources used by the early settlers. Today, we use those names, often without a thought about the stories they tell and the history they document. Taken in aggregate, the information in these two volumes literally tells the story of the exploration and settlement of southern Utah.
