Excerpt from Varieties of Pacifism Catch the sounds of pain in books. You cannot hear the sighing of a boy whose life is ebbing away, and who keeps on saying Mother, Mother, until his heart stops beating. You cannot hear the groan of a man whose legs have been blown Off, or the shriek of a man whose every breath is an agony. You cannot hear the death rattle in a single throat, much less in a thousand throats. These things are not to be found in books. Nor can you get the sights of war in books. You can not see the twitching of a nerve, the spasm of a muscle, the contortion of a body twisted into terrible shapes by a torture that cannot be ex pressed. You cannot see the glazing of eyes in death. Nobody knows what war is who has not been in war. There are millions of men who now. Excerpt from A Brief Outline Bulletin of the Nature and Aims of Pacifism The objections raised against the Peace Movement are mostly based upon an entirely wrong conception of the problem. Generally those ideas that are so strongly combatted, refuted and ridiculed are for the most part not involved at all. The following paragraphs contain a brief outline of the fundamental ideas of Pacifism, which show how unfounded the common objections are. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Menace of Peace As deviously and vastly as Germany prepared for war, so deviously and vastly is she now preparing for peace. The same pestilential espionage, so repulsive yet pervasive and prevailing; the same loathsome perfection of forgery, falsehood, and intrigue; the same stark insensibility to the usual decencies, the common nobilities, of the game of life; the same shameless rejoicing in every form of human infidelity and dishonour: these, with added modes and messengers polluting, are now co-ordinated in a ramified propaganda for a peace that shall leave Germany relatively undefeated, if not obviously victorious. Excerpt from Socialism for Pacifists During last summer so many Pacifists, attracted to the i.l.p. Movement by its opposition to the war, wrote to me asking for a simple statement of the case for Socialism as Opposed to the case for Militarism that I decided to attempt to write a small book to meet the demand. I had written the first three chapters when I was removed to Pentonville Prison to serve a sentence imposed under the Defence of the Realm Act for attach ing my signature to a leaflet denouncing Conscription. The last five chapters have been written during a week's holiday at Letchworth, previous to my arrest under the Military Service Act. I regret that I have no oppor tunity to revise the ms.; there are many blemishes I would like to remove. Under the circumstances I must ask the indulgence of my readers, and trust that where there is repetition it will only serve to emphasise points which have seemed to me important. Excerpt from The Bulwarks of Peace Mankind are at length fully alive to the terrible evils of war. But, in order that everything possible may be done to avoid these evils in the future, it is necessary that those who influence the opinion of the various nations should have a clear apprehension of all the means which are available for the preservation of peace, and, at the same time, that they should appreciate the danger of placing excessive reliance upon the efficacy of any particular measure. At present there appears to be a disposition on the part of many generous minds to believe that the formation of a League of Nations for the purpose of preventing wars will in itself result in the practical maintenance of general peace. It certainly, indeed, seems probable that a confederacy of this kind, which has been advocated by several great thinkers in the course of the last few centuries, will be actually established at no distant date.
