This book is volume three of McColloughs memoir. Ever since joining a writers group at the Saratoga Retirement Community in 2006 he has enjoyed writing these short pieces of memoir and commentary. But, this is the final book in the series. He will continue to write and comment, but not for publication.

In 1941, John Paquette decided to enlist in the U.S. Army to fulfill his one-year military obligation. He planned to enter college on a football scholarship after he completed his service. The Japanese had other plans and after December 7, 1941, John found that he was in the army for the duration. Trained to fly C-47 transports, John found himself in the South Pacific for 18 months and won the Distinguished Flying Cross and 16 Air Medals. After the war he returned home, raised a family, and lived an honorable life. Only in recent years has he felt the need to examine his life and try to find patterns and meaning within it. Originally from the Côte d'Ivoire, Ahmadou Kourouma spent much of his life working in the insurance industry and living in France and in political exile elsewhere in Africa before returning to Abidjan in 1993. His earlier novels are The Suns of Independence and Monnew. Carrol F. Coates is Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Binghamton University-SUNY and has translated numerous books, including Jacques Stephen Alexis's General Sun, My Brother (Virginia).
