Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Energy Sciences, , language: English, abstract: This policy paper demonstrates the waste crisis in Morocco, Tunisia, and Lebanon; countries located in the MENA region. It highlights how all three countries are facing a 1.5-3 % increase in waste generation and the urgency for a sustainable and innovative solution. Given that they all have more than 50% of organic waste generated in their composition, a waste-to-energy approach is most suitable. This policy targets various stakeholders such as Ministries, Nationals, and private associations and donors for involvement. Among the different solutions suggested, methane capturing and upgrading is suggested (short-term), as well as anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis (long-term). Also, a monitoring and evaluation plan was suggested. Finally, recommendations were placed based on best practices to ensure the sustainable future in terms of waste-to-energy management in these three countries.

Rapid population growth, high standards of living, and technological development are constantly increasing the diversity and quantity of solid waste. The production of solid municipal waste associated with the high proportion of organic waste and its improper disposal lead to considerable environmental pollution due to the emission of greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, etc. In such a challenging environment, municipal authorities need to develop more effective solutions to manage the growing urban solid waste. Most of the municipal solid waste mainly constitutes degradable materials, which represent a significant role in greenhouse gas emissions in urban localities. Integrated solid waste management approaches must be developed and improved to manage the increasing organic fractions of municipal solid waste, which helps to reduce greenhouse emissions with potential economic benefits. A sustainable management of municipal solid waste systems constitutes a promising and attractive trend to study current consumption behaviors responsible for waste generation, and to protect the global ecosystem. This book presents the management of municipal of solid waste, including recycling and landfill technologies. Moreover, composition and types of waste will be investigated. This research deals with the increasingly complex issues of waste generation, waste management and waste disposal that in less developed industrialised countries present diverse but critical concerns. It takes a socio-economic and policy-oriented perspective and provides empirical evidence at EU and regional level. The EU and Italy are taken as relevant case studies given the disparities in environmental performances between less and more developed areas. The rich and various empirical evidence shows that a robust delinking between waste generation and economic growth is still not present, thus future policies should directly address the problem at the source by targeting waste generation in EU countries. Some structural factors like population density and urbanisation present themselves as relevant drivers of both waste management and landfill diversion. Nevertheless, economic and structural factors alone are not sufficient to improve waste performances. Though waste policies are to be redesigned by covering the entire area of waste management, some first signals of policy effectiveness are arising. This work will be of most interest to those students of environmental economics and environmental sciences, as well as policy makers, waste utility managers and companies in the waste management sector.
