Excerpt from Water and Sewage Purification Somewhat later, Cardiff6 determined to adopt a similar course in regard to a portion of their gathering ground, which had been pro visionally given up as not wholly satisfactory for waterworks purposes. The saving involved if these two decisions could be successfully carried out was of a very material kind. Excerpt from Water Purification and Sewage Disposal Since the recognition of their significance in the promotion of the public health, methods of water purification and sewage disposal have earned a steadily increasing importance. Consequently, these branches of industry have enjoyed the most zealous atten tion of the scientist and of the engineer. I have endeavoured in the present monograph to give a survey, short perhaps, but as complete as possible, of the present position in regard to Water Purification and Sewage Disposal. Owing to the wide range of this subject particular processes could only be treated shortly in the space at disposal. One chapter, which is very fully treated in the present volume, though slightly elsewhere, is the disposal of industrial sewage. Many of the processes of purification are of quite recent date, and fresh experience is being obtained daily and reported upon in the most diverse publications. I have endeavoured to collect such information. In the translation some small changes and additions have been made in the chapters on sand filtration, the removal of manganese, and Travis and Emscher wells. Excerpt from The Purification of Sewage and Water As no work in this connection can be proceeded with, without a full knowledge of the means by which the results of the various experiments can be checked, the necessary analytical methods most suitable for that purpose will be described, and the most simple and effective processes given at sufficient length to enable the experimentalist to conduct such tests for himself. Having obtained the results of these tests as may be required, he will find their bearing upon the work in hand fully dealt with and explained. Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Excerpt from Sewage Treatment, Purification, and Utilization The importance of the Sewage question may, perhaps, be fairly gauged by the number of patents of which it has been the subject, and its still unsettled state may be concluded from their varied and contradictory character. Freezing and heating, concentration and dilution, electrisation and magnetising, the addition of oxidisers and deoxidisers, of ferments and preventives of fermentation recommended, if not actually tried, show the want of any distinct and generally recognised principle. I have, therefore, thought it my duty to lay before the public in plain language and in a concise form the result of my experience in treating sewage and waste waters. That experience dates back to the year 1868, and except in 1870 my attention has during the whole of that time been almost exclusively directed to this question. I have worked with sewage in every quantity, from a few ounces in a beaker or a hydrometer-jar to a daily flow of ten million gallons. I have had opportunities for examining almost every known process, irrigation, filtration, aeration as well as precipitation in its many variations. Excerpt from Sewage and the Bacterial Purification of Sewage The theoretical basis of the bacterial changes, so far as they have been at present studied, must underlie all the practical schemes which may in the future be put forward, and it has been my endeavour in the following pages to deal with the subject from this point of view. I have to thank many friends and firms for information and the loan of blocks, and also my assistant, Mr. C. G. Stewart, for helping me in preparing the work for the press.
