Web Intelligence Meets Brain Informatics

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the First WICI International Workshop on Web Intelligence meets Brain Informatics, WImBI 2006, which was held in Beijing, China, in December 2006. The workshop explores a new perspective of Web Intelligence (WI) research from the viewpoint of Brain Informatics (BI). The 26 revised full-length papers presented together with three introductory lectures have been carefully reviewed and selected.

This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at The 2009 Inter- tional Conference on Brain Informatics (BI 2009) held at Beijing University of Technology, China, on October 22–24, 2009. It was organized by the Web Int- ligence Consortium (WIC) and IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Task Force on Brain Informatics (IEEE TF-BI). The conference was held jointly with The 2009 International Conference on Active Media Technology (AMT 2009). Brain informatics (BI) has emergedas an interdisciplinaryresearch?eld that focuses on studying the mechanisms underlying the human information proce- ing system (HIPS). It investigates the essential functions of the brain, ranging from perception to thinking, and encompassing such areas as multi-perception, attention,memory,language,computation,heuristicsearch,reasoning,planning, decision-making, problem-solving, learning, discovery, and creativity. The goal of BI is to develop and demonstrate a systematic approach to achieving an integrated understanding of both macroscopic and microscopic level working principles of the brain, by means of experimental, computational, and cognitive neuroscience studies, as well as utilizing advanced Web Intelligence (WI) centric information technologies. BI represents a potentially revolutionary shift in the way that research is undertaken. It attempts to capture new forms of c- laborative and interdisciplinary work. Following this vision, new kinds of BI methods and global research communities will emerge, through infrastructure on the wisdom Web and knowledge grids that enables high speed and d- tributed, large-scale analysis and computations, and radically new ways of sh- ing data/knowledge.

In recent years the Internet has become a source of data and information of indisputable importance and has immensely gained in acceptance and popularity. The World Wide Web (WWW or Web, for short), frequently named “the nervous system of the infor- tion society,” offers numerous valuable services leaving no doubt about the signi?cance of the Web in our daily activities at work and at home. Consequently, we have a clear aspiration to meet the obvious need for effective use of its potential by making - provements in both the methods and the technology applied. Among the new research directions observable in Web-related applications, intelligent methods from within the broadly perceived topic of soft computing occupy an important place. AWIC, the “Atlantic Web Intelligence Conferences” are intended to be a forum for exchange of new ideas and novel practical solutions in this new and exciting ?eld. The conference was born as an initiative of the WIC-Poland and the WIC-Spain Research Centres, both belonging to the Web Intelligence Consortium – WIC (http://wi-consortium.org/). So far, three AWIC conferences have been held: in Madrid, Spain (2003), in Cancun, Mexico (2004), and in ?ódz, ́ Poland (2005).

This book constitutes the proceedings of the International Conference on Brain Informatics and Health, BIH 2014, held in Warsaw, Poland, in August 2014, as part of 2014 Web Intelligence Congress, WIC 2014. The 29 full papers presented together with 23 special session papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 101 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on brain understanding; cognitive modelling; brain data analytics; health data analytics; brain informatics and data management; semantic aspects of biomedical analytics; healthcare technologies and systems; analysis of complex medical data; understanding of information processing in brain; neuroimaging data processing strategies; advanced methods of interactive data mining for personalized medicine.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Brain Informatics, BI 2019, held in Haikou, China, in December 2019. The 26 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 36 submissions. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: cognitive and computational foundations of brain science; human information processing systems; brain big data analysis, curation and management; informatics paradigms for brain and mental health research; and brain-machine intelligence and brain-inspired computing. Also included is a special session on computational social analysis for mental health.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Brain Informatics, BI 2012, held in Macau, China, in December 2012. The 34 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on computer science, information technology, artificial intelligence, web intelligence, cognitive science, neuroscience, medical science, life science, economics, data mining, data and knowledge engineering, intelligent agent technology, human computer interaction, complex systems, and system science.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Brain Informatics, BI 2011, held in Lanzhou, China, in September 2011. The 27 revised full papers and 6 keynote talks were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. They are grouped in topcial sections on thinking and perception-centric investigations of human information processing systems; information technologies for the management, analysis and use of brain data; cognition-inspired applications. Furthermore, there is a section with 8 papers from the workshop on meta-synthesis and complex systems.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Brain Informatics, BI 2010, held in Toronto, China, in August 2010. The 60 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 222 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on cognitive computing; data brain and analysis; neuronal modeling and brain modeling; perception and information processing; learning; cognition-inspired applications; and WICI perspectives on brain informatics.
