Now in a full-length book, the New York Times Pulitzer Prize–winning graphic story of a refugee family who fled the civil war in Syria to make a new life in America After escaping a Syrian prison, Ibrahim Aldabaan and his family fled the country to seek protection in America. Among the few refugees to receive visas, they finally landed in JFK airport on November 8, 2016, Election Day. The family had reached a safe harbor, but woke up to the world of Donald Trump and a Muslim ban that would sever them from the grandmother, brothers, sisters, and cousins stranded in exile in Jordan. Welcome to the New World tells the Aldabaans’ story. Resettled in Connecticut with little English, few friends, and even less money, the family of seven strive to create something like home. As a blur of language classes, job-training programs, and the fearsome first days of high school (with hijab) give way to normalcy, the Aldabaans are lulled into a sense of security. A white van cruising slowly past the house prompts some unease, which erupts into full terror when the family receives a death threat and is forced to flee and start all over yet again. The America in which the Aldabaans must make their way is by turns kind and ignorant, generous and cruel, uplifting and heartbreaking. Delivered with warmth and intimacy, Jake Halpern and Michael Sloan's Welcome to the New World is a wholly original view of the immigrant experience, revealing not only the trials and successes of one family but showing the spirit of a town and a country, for good and bad.

"This superior dystopian thriller takes on AI, climate change, and pressing issues of freedom" ~ Booklife, Editor's Choice "Embark on a whirlwind of feverish exhileration in this post-apocalyptic page-turner" ~ Independent Book Review "Raleigh's smart apocalyptic novel delves into a credible near future in which climate change and AI reshape the world and call the very essence of humanity into question?"A thought-provoking and plausible speculative tale." ~ KirkusWho knew that escaping reality might just be the way we destroy it?Will Robin does what no one should: pluck microchips from people's heads. In an age where AI has been fully integrated with human life, Will clearly sees what everyone else doesn't; that it's a ploy for control and power. What started out as using his skill to exercise his own free will quickly became a passion and a mission to free the world around him. Even if it's just one pluck at a time. When the government gets wind of this, they target Will, and it sets off a cascade of events that threatens to take the one thing that he values most: his freedom. But that won't be the only price he pays.As Will's life spirals out of control, he must deal with ruthless government agents, cutthroat corporate assassins, and an AI named Aja who's willing to torture him into submission. Amid all this chaos, the Earth is falling apart, and people revel in the metaverse as a brief escape. Water turns to dust, living becomes a struggle, and people claw at each other just to survive. Will knows that everything is connected but proving that is hard and stopping it is even harder. Welcome to the Free World is a thrilling new adult novel of a young man's journey as he faces climate change, escapism, and oppression. This startling story shows us the power one person can have during our darkest hours. Join Will on his journey as he aims to topple authoritarian governments, malicious corporations, and break the shackles they use to bind us. Yet, despite these pure intentions, the cost and loss may just cripple him.

Whom We Shall Welcome examines World War II immigration of Italians to the United States, an under-studied period in Italian immigration history. Danielle Battisti looks at efforts by Italian American organizations to foster Italian immigration along with the lobbying efforts of Italian Americans to change the quota laws. While Italian Americans (and other white ethnics) had attained virtual political and social equality with many other groups of older-stock Americans by the end of the war, Italians continued to be classified as undesirable immigrants. Her work is an important contribution toward understanding the construction of Italian American racial/ethnic identity in this period, the role of ethnic groups in U.S. foreign policy in the Cold War era, and the history of the liberal immigration reform movement that led to the 1965 Immigration Act. Whom We Shall Welcome makes significant contributions to histories of migration and ethnicity, post-World War II liberalism, and immigration policy.
