This book uses various theoretical perspectives to summarize what is known about the multiple causes of men's violence against women, and stresses the importance of identifying men's risk factors. The preliminary multivariate model identifies four content areas: macrosocietal; biological; gender role socialization; and relational factors to explain men's violence against women. Within these four content areas the editors develop thirteen preliminary hypotheses about the causes of men's violence against women, which are critiqued by the contributors in the subsequent chapters.

The United Nations Multi-country Study on Men and Violence explores the meaning and causes of men's violence against women - and why some men are more or less likely than other men to abuse women. This report presents findings from the quantitative component of the study. Interviews were conducted with more than 10,000 men and 3,000 women in urban and rural locations in the Asia-Pacific region, including in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea, regarding how masculinities relate to men's perceptions and perpetration of gender-based violence; men's use of different forms of violence against women - specifically intimate partner violence and non-partner rape; and men's own experience of violence and how it relates to the perpetration of violence against women.
