What Is The Code Of Conduct For Responsible Fisheries

This Code outlines general principles and guidelines for all commercial fishing operation that take place in Canadian water. Bearing in mind that Canada played a leading role in the development of the U.N. Food Agriculture Organisation (FAO)Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, this Canadian Code of conduct is consistent with, and in no way diminishes, the FAO code. The Code has been articulated by Canadian fish harvesters who ratified that Conservation Harvesting Plans or Fisheries Management Plans should incorporate the Code of Conduct.

This CD-ROM contains the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and its supporting documents and instruments, including the international plans of action, technical guidelines, documents prepared for the sessions of the FAO Committee on Fisheries and the video entitled "Connecting the lines". It is planned to update this CD-ROM periodically as more information becomes available. This publication contains the report of the workshop, held in Fiji in October 2003. Issues discussed include: the 1995 FAO Code and its framework, legal considerations and issues; responsible fisheries management and post-harvest practices; aquaculture and inland fisheries; and the integration of fisheries into coastal area management.
