What's Ahead in Education?: An Analysis of the Policies of the Obama Administration illuminates the educational views of President Barack Obama. This is done by studying his life to date, his writings and speeches, as well as his initiatives thus far, in the field of education. His unique educational background and public service prior to assuming the presidency offers a number of clues as to how he will perform as President. Attention is also paid to those individuals such as his father, mother, his wife, Michelle, and his Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. By studying his early steps in developing the stimulus package, the Race to the Top, and a blue print for reauthorizing No Child Left Behind, readers can better understand the likely future of the President's education initiatives.

This open access Springer Brief provides a systematic analysis of current trends and requirements in the areas of knowledge and competence in the context of the project “(A) Higher Education Digital (AHEAD)—International Horizon Scanning / Trend Analysis on Digital Higher Education.” It examines the latest developments in learning theory, didactics, and digital-education technology in connection with an increasingly digitized higher education landscape. In turn, this analysis forms the basis for envisioning higher education in 2030. Here, four learning pathways are developed to provide a glimpse of higher education in 2030: Tamagotchi, a closed ecosystem that is built around individual students who enter the university soon after secondary education; Jenga, in which universities offer a solid foundation of knowledge to build on in later phases; Lego, where the course of study is not a monolithic unit, but consists of individually combined modules of different sizes; and Transformer, where students have already acquired their own professional identities and life experiences, which they integrate into their studies. In addition, innovative practice cases are presented to illustrate each learning path.

First published in 1998, this volume compares disability services and strategies along with students with disabilities across various countries around the world. Its publication followed a series of conferences held at different international locations. These papers have been brought together with the aim to better inform our understanding of approaches to disabled students and their experiences. Focusing on topics such as the Australian Disability Discrimination Act (1992), disability policy and supporting students with disabilities in higher education, this volume will be of use to students, lecturers, researchers and policymakers, whether able-bodied, neurotypical or disabled.

Every year, the World Bank’s World Development Report (WDR) features a topic of central importance to global development. The 2018 WDR—LEARNING to Realize Education’s Promise—is the first ever devoted entirely to education. And the time is right: education has long been critical to human welfare, but it is even more so in a time of rapid economic and social change. The best way to equip children and youth for the future is to make their learning the center of all efforts to promote education. The 2018 WDR explores four main themes: First, education’s promise: education is a powerful instrument for eradicating poverty and promoting shared prosperity, but fulfilling its potential requires better policies—both within and outside the education system. Second, the need to shine a light on learning: despite gains in access to education, recent learning assessments reveal that many young people around the world, especially those who are poor or marginalized, are leaving school unequipped with even the foundational skills they need for life. At the same time, internationally comparable learning assessments show that skills in many middle-income countries lag far behind what those countries aspire to. And too often these shortcomings are hidden—so as a first step to tackling this learning crisis, it is essential to shine a light on it by assessing student learning better. Third, how to make schools work for all learners: research on areas such as brain science, pedagogical innovations, and school management has identified interventions that promote learning by ensuring that learners are prepared, teachers are both skilled and motivated, and other inputs support the teacher-learner relationship. Fourth, how to make systems work for learning: achieving learning throughout an education system requires more than just scaling up effective interventions. Countries must also overcome technical and political barriers by deploying salient metrics for mobilizing actors and tracking progress, building coalitions for learning, and taking an adaptive approach to reform.

This discussion paper identifies some of the key challenges that will influence the course of public education over the next 20 years. The first section outlines current trends and their implications for public education in seven categories: changes in age composition of the population, ethno-racial mix, family structure, labour market & the economy, information & communications technology, governance & structures, and changing values & expectations. The second section summarizes the current debate about education and the possible directions it could take as a result of societal trends. The concluding section presents potential areas for future investigation.
