How is it that this woman's breasts glimmer so clearly through her saree? Can't you guess, my friends? What are they but rays from the crescents left by the nails of her lover pressing her in his passion, rays now luminous as the moonlight of a summer night? These South Indian devotional poems show the dramatic use of erotic language to express a religious vision. Written by men during the fifteenth to eighteenth century, the poems adopt a female voice, the voice of a courtesan addressing her customer. That customer, it turns out, is the deity, whom the courtesan teases for his infidelities and cajoles into paying her more money. Brazen, autonomous, fully at home in her body, she merges her worldly knowledge with the deity's transcendent power in the act of making love. This volume is the first substantial collection in English of these Telugu writings, which are still part of the standard repertoire of songs used by classical South Indian dancers. A foreword provides context for the poems, investigating their religious, cultural, and historical significance. Explored, too, are the attempts to contain their explicit eroticism by various apologetic and rationalizing devices. The translators, who are poets as well as highly respected scholars, render the poems with intelligence and tenderness. Unusual for their combination of overt eroticism and devotion to God, these poems are a delight to read.

A Ship of the Law travels the infinite enormity of space, carrying 82 young people: fighters, strategists, scientists; the Children. They work with sophisticated non-human technologies that need new thinking to comprehend them. They are cut off forever from the people they left behind. Denied information, they live within a complex system that is both obedient and beyond their control. They are frightened. And they are making war against entities whose technologies are so advanced, so vast, as to dwarf them. Against something whose psychology is ultimately, unknowably alien.

When God Prayed is based on a popular seminar that pastor and longtime Billy Graham associate Don Wilton first gave at Graham’s training center, The Cove. It looks with intense depth at the words of Jesus in John 17 when he prayed for himself, his disciples, and for all believers when he knew that death on the cross was near. The longest prayer spoken by Jesus in the Gospels reveals so much about God’s heart for his people, the utter sacrifice and tension of the crucifixion, and the ways in which God continues his work in us today. Wilton writes, “I would pray that this book would simply stir your soul and move your heart to a fresh realization of the wonderful work of our Lord and Savior as he came in obedience to the Father unto death. I pray you will discover just how much we have not discovered and just how far reaching the mind of Christ really is. I pray we will all be driven to our knees in gratitude to God.”
