It was a cause celebre: the biggest case of alleged art fraud to come before the Australian criminal justice system, a $4.5 million sting drawing in one of the country's most gifted and ultimately tragic artists, Brett Whiteley, a heroin addict who died alone in 1992.It started with suspicions raised about artworks being produced in the style of Whiteley in a Melbourne art restorer's studio. Secret photographs were taken as the paintings took form.A jury finds two men guilty of faking Whiteleys, but a year later the appeal bench sensationally acquits them. The paintings are returned to their owners, leaving the legitimacy of the artworks in limbo. Whiteley on Trial investigates this remarkable case and exposes the avarice of the art world, the disdain for connoisseurship and the fragility of authenticity.

Walk into any first-period high school classroom and it's obvious: teenagers are exhausted. Sleep deprivation is an epidemic as widespread as obesityâ€"and just as damaging. Fortunately, science has answers and Dr. Helene Emsellem has solutions that all parents can use. Affecting the lives of more than 41 million adolescents in the United States alone, sleep deprivation is a chronic problem for kids today. We know this intuitively as we watch teenagers frantically juggle a hectic social calendar with the overwhelming demands of school, work, and chores. School performance around the country is sufferingâ€"but it's not just grades that are at risk. Sleep deprivation has been found to affect nearly every aspect of a teenager's life, from emotional stability and behavioral issues to physical well-being and the potential for drug and alcohol abuse. For years, we've blamed many of these adolescent characteristics on the natural maturing process or changing hormones. And while chemicals do surge through the body creating strong effects, sleepâ€"the right amount and the right kindâ€"has now been targeted for its prime importance in overall success and well-being.

THE intention of this book is to provide a guide for potential management and supervisors and for those who wish to understand the fundamental principles of biscuit manufacture. It does not set out to be a learned treatise. The purpose of the book is to simplify and explain processes and materials so that the 'mystique'is replaced by logic. Once the mystique is removed the biscuit maker is one step closer to anticipating and solving problems. In attempting to cover this subject within one concise volume, it is difficult to avoid over-simplification or generalisation, and apologies must be offered in advance where these occur. To wallow in the fine details of specialisation is to defeat the object of the book, and less would be achieved if the issues were confused. The reader's attention is drawn to the interpretation of formulae (recipes). Raw materials, equipment, methods, processes, and conditions vary considerably; the formulae are intended as blue prints from which, with a knowledge of the materials and aims of the processes, and by trial and error, a biscuit can be produced bearing some semblance to the original. All formulae should be interpreted in conjunction with the 'Guide to using formulae' at the beginning of Chapter 12. As the biscuit industry advances towards complete automation, plant and equipment become more advanced and sophisticated.

An intellectual biography of the cultural critic Reyner Banham. Reyner Banham (1922-88) was one of the most influential writers on architecture, design, and popular culture from the mid-1950s to the late 1980s. Trained in mechanical engineering and art history, he was convinced that technology was making society not only more exciting but more democratic. His combination of academic rigor and pop culture sensibility put him in opposition to both traditionalists and orthodox Modernists, but placed him in a unique position to understand the cultural, social, and political implications of the visual arts in the postwar period. His first book, Theory and Design in the First Machine Age (still in print with The MIT Press after forty years), was central to the overhaul of Modernism, and it gave Futurism and Expressionism credibility amid the dynamism and change of the 1960s. This intellectual biography is the first comprehensive critical examination of Banham's theories and ideas, not only on architecture but also on the wide variety of subjects that interested him. It covers the full range of his oeuvre and discusses the values, enthusiasms, and influences that formed his thinking.

Brett Whiteley (Australia; England, b.1939, d.1992)Hyena: no. 6 from the series My relationship between screen printing and Regents Park Zoo between June and August 1965 (detail)(1965)two-colour screenprint, printed on paper, 76.1 x 60 cmArt Gallery of New South WalesPurchased 1965Photo: AGNSW© Wendy Whiteley______________________________________Written by leading evidence law scholars, combined with practitioner contribution, The Trial examines procedural and evidentiary law under the uniform Evidence Acts. This is a book for evidence law students, scholars and for practising lawyers. The Trial challenges mainstream approaches to teaching evidence law by:contextualising the trial within key pre-trial processes, including police questioning, disclosure obligations and pleadings;connecting law reform, lawyers' roles and their ethical obligations to promote justice in a broad rather than a narrow, anodyne or legalistic fashion;acknowledging 21st century lawyers' need for literacy across human rights fair trial norms and their common law equivalents; andits interdisciplinary emphasis. The Trial focuses its study on the important functions of adversarialism and the oral tradition, as well as the consequential price exacted through diminishing access to justice for the vulnerable, particularly those with mental illness or cognitive impairment, children and sexual assault complainant witnesses. Regarding Indigenous Australians, The Trial also shows how such challenges compound the pre-existing harshness of criminal justice processes. In Australia, no comprehensive evidence book presents doctrinal analysis so comprehensively within a humanising context. The Trial places the criminal jury trial centre-stage. This is where the law of evidence and procedure is commonly hotly contested, where major defining evidentiary case law arises and where the cut and thrust of advocacy, crucially shaping the trial, are classically on show. It is also where rapid change has an impact on expertise and, through law reform, creates pressures on fundamental accusatorial principles in an increasingly complex justice environment.
