More than just a biography or discography, this work is a thoroughly detailed guide to the recorded works of the legendary British rock and roll group The Who. From their early hits of the 1960s ("I Can't Explain" and "My Generation") through the ambitious concept works (Tommy, Lifehouse, Quadrophenia) to their later successes, this work encompasses the entire range of The Who's music. The chronological narrative stretches from their beginnings in West London in the early 1960s to their international superstar status through the 1970s and 1980s. Each phase of the band's recording career is given detailed coverage, along with historical background notes and a critical analysis of every known Who recording. Many previously uncovered facts are incorporated into the text, and the author has been able to glean exclusive information from The Who's archives. Unrealized Who projects such as the Lifehouse film, as well as many unreleased performances, are discussed and analyzed for the first time in print. Finally, the work contains a definitive discography of currently available CDs and an exhaustive appendix of every known Who song with relevant recording information.

The Who were a mass of contradictions. They brought intellect to rock but were the darlings of punks. They were the quintessential studio act yet were also the greatest live attraction in the world. They perfectly meshed on stage and displayed a complete lack of personal chemistry offstage. Along with their great live shows and supreme audio experiences, the Who provided great copy. During the 1960s and '70s, Pete Townshend, messianic about contemporary popular music and its central importance in the lives of young people, gave sprawling interviews in which he alternately celebrated and deplored what he saw in the "scene." Several of these interviews have come to be considered classic documents of the age. Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, and John Entwistle joined in. Even when the Who were non-operational or past their peak, their interviews continued to be as compelling: changes in allegiances and social mores left the band members freer to talk about sex, drug-taking, business, and in-fighting. By collecting interviews with Who members from across five decades, The Who on The Who provides the full, fractious story of the band.

"On September 25, 2003, our daughter, Julie Ayer Rubenzer, walked into the Cosmetic Surgery Center in Sarasota, Florida. She did not walk out. This diary records the outrageous events that occurred from that first phone call to 2011-the ruling on Julie's death certificate," says author Donald W. Ayer. The Who's Next Club: A Cosmetic Surgery Disaster records the painful aftermath of a surgery gone wrong. This insightful true story was written in the hope of making a difference by reducing the cosmetic surgery death rate and exposing the disparity in justice when the people seeking justice are not rich or famous. After three months of suffering, Ayer's daughter was laid to rest on December 29, 2003. On the advice of their attorney, Ayer and his wife began this journal after their daughter entered the hospital; but they put it to rest for two months until February 2004, "when we learned what actually happened in that surgery room." In 2005, Florida conducted a licensing hearing in Sarasota. "We attended, heard the sworn testimony, and at that point had a legal record of that surgery." But the Ayers did not receive justice or closure. Donald W. Ayer lives with his wife, Maureen, in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He has a degree in English from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, sold life insurance and then became a real estate agent. At age 74, he is now writing his second book, which he is also dedicating to his daughter, Julie.
