Love's Labour's Lost was one of Shakespeare's early comedies. It tells the story of the King of Navarre and his three companions (Lords Berowne, Dumaine, and Longaville) who, in an attempt to spend three years studying and fasting, decide to avoid the company of women. This is all thwarted however with the arrival of the Princess of France and her court ladies. Setting up camp outside the court (due to the King having imposed a ban on women inside), the Princess and her companions stir feelings of love in the men. The play is notable for the inclusion of the longest word in all of Shakespeare's plays: honorificabilitudinitatibus. One of the main themes of Love's Labour's Lost, is that of masculine desire, which throughout the play is deferred and confused. The earliest recorded performance of this play was in 1597, before Queen Elizabeth.

One of Shakespeare's early comedies, Love's Labour's Lost follows the travails of the King of Navarre and three of his companions as they make a vow to eschew the attentions of women and devote themselves entirely to scholarship for a period of three years. In a classic case of poor timing, each of the four men soon crosses paths with their soul-mate, and hilarity ensues. Rife with witty word play, critics agree that Love's Labour's Lost is one play that particularly rewards a close reading.

The sparkling repartee between the fair visitors from France and their hosts in Navarre, whose vow to study out of sight of woman is quickly broken, makes Love's Labour's Lost one of the most delightful and stageworthy of Shakespeare's comedies. This edition offers a number of new readings of difficult and disputed passages, together with some suggestions about the way in which the play's notorious `tangles' may have come about. The text is based on the quarto of 1598 and takes full account of the extensive scholarly study which that text has received over recent years. It offers a fascinating insight into shakespeare's mode of composition, improvisation, and revision.

Love's Labour's Lost is one of William Shakespeare's early comedies, believed to have been written in the mid-1590s for a performance at the Inns of Court before Queen Elizabeth I. It follows the King of Navarre and his three companions as they attempt to swear off the company of women for three years in order to focus on study and fasting. Their subsequent infatuation with the Princess of France and her ladies makes them forsworn. In an untraditional ending for a comedy, the play closes with the death of the Princess's father, and all weddings are delayed for a year. The play draws on themes of masculine love and desire, reckoning and rationalisation, and reality versus fantasy.Though first published in quarto in 1598, the play's title page suggests a revision of an earlier version of the play. While there are no obvious sources for the play's plot, the four main characters are loosely based on historical figures. The use of apostrophes in the play's title varies in early editions, though it is most commonly given as Love's Labour's Lost.Includes a biography of the author.
