With A Field Ambulance On The Western Front

Herbert Bruce Low served for 31/2 years as a doctor on the Western Front. He was involved in the evacuation and treatment of the wounded from some of the biggest battles of the war, including the Somme and Passchendaele, and was twice decorated for bravery. A civilian in uniform 'doing his bit' with endurance and good humour, he wrote home several times a week. His letters, written at all times of the day and night - in Belgian farmhouses and convent schools, in tents and huts, in French chateaux, or at the bottom of deep German-built dugouts - describe not only the medical work during military operations, but also some of the lighter moments during rest periods behind the lines. Illustrated with 11 maps and 43 images and supported by detailed explanatory notes, this is a remarkable day-by-day account of the life of a British military doctor during the First World War.

On 21st March 1918, 29th and 3rd Casualty Clearing Stations RAMC were encamped at Grévillers, just behind the front line, when Germany launched its final, massive offensive. These Field Hospitals were the lifeline to the rear for the unabated deluge of wounded which soon overwhelmed both units; all wards were full and operating theatres were working round the clock to deal with the endless queues for amputations and major surgery. In the words of Major-General von Bertele in his foreword: 'that casualty care should be managed on such a scale and at such a pace leaves the reader open mouthed.' Mayhew moves her account along the route followed by wounded men, from stretcher to aid station, from jolting ambulance to crowded operating tent, from railway station to the ship home, exploring actual cases of casualties who recorded their experiences. Both comprehensive and intimate, this groundbreaking book captures an often neglected aspect of the soldier's world and a transformative moment in military and medical history.

Henry Owens Great War diary provides a vivid and complete narrative, seen from the perspective of an army doctor, of what it was like to live and fight in the trenches of the Western Front. Owens, a member of the original British expeditionary Force, the Old Contemptibles, was among the first British soldiers to set foot in France. He spent the next four years in the front line as a doctor and a diarist, an eyewitness to some of the most bitter and violent struggles of the greatest conflict the world had ever seen. His writing, edited and with a full introduction by John Hutton, gives us an inside view of the duties and experiences of a doctor tending the fighting troops, and it paints a graphic portrait of the daily lives of the men themselves. Henry Owens was born into a doctors family in Long Stratton, Norfolk in 1889. When war was declared in 1914, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force. He served as a front-line medical officer throughout the conflict and he kept a diary and notes. After the war he used this material to assemble this meticulous account of his experiences. After being demobilized in 1919 he returned to civilian medical practice and married, but he died after a sudden illness in 1921, aged just 31. After the death of his wife in 1980, the diary came into the possession of the Imperial War Museum.
