The Old Wives Tale deals with the lives of two very different sisters, Constance and Sophia Baines, following their stories from their youth, working in their mother's draper's shop, through the period of separation and quite different lives, into old age. It covers a period of about 70 years from roughly 1840 to 1905, and is set in Paris and Burslem, a town in the Potteries district of North Staffordshire.

From goddesses and witches to modern-day doctors—an entertaining history of women healers featuring an A–Z of remedies The woman healer is as old as history—for millennia she has been doctor, nurse, and midwife, and even in the age of modern medicine her wisdom is handed down in the form of old wives' tales. Using extensive research into archives and original texts, and numerous conversations with women in city and countryside, Mary Chamberlain presents a stimulating challenge to the history of orthodox medicine and an illuminating survey of female wisdom which goes back to the earliest times. What are old wives’ tales? Where do they come from? Do they really work? These questions, and many more, are answered in this fascinating compendium of remedies and cures handed down from mother to daughter from the beginning of time. We may all know that stewed prunes are a cure for constipation, but how many of us were aware that a poultice of chicken manure is a remedy for baldness? Or that eel liver will aid a difficult labor?

Four Wives are summoned to a mysterious castle for the reading of a will by their late husband, each having been married to him unbeknownst of each other. The Stipulations of the deceased as he appears on a video monitor is for each of his wives to read a tale from ancient books put before them. Their late husband was an eccentric, scary butlers roam the castle, and just about every kind of exotic animal runs loose as his pets creating havoc and laughs and pauses of relief when each story is told and the scary book is closed shut. The four stories are all different and all dark, and the intermissions between each story is a story in itself. This is an unproduced screenplay.

I define Ole Wives Tales, as a belief or practice that is not completely supported by the bible. Have you ever heard someone say: I dont care what the bible says; I know what Ive been taught? If so, you were a witness to an Ole Wives Tale in action. I used the word completely in the first sentence because most of the ole tales rely on excerpts from scripture to support their conclusions. Jesus taught us that the whole bible must be merged into a consensus about any subject that is taught. He illustrated that when He was being tempted by Satan and also when He exchanged views with the Chief Priests and their lawyers. In each of those examples Jesus answered their quoting of scripture by declaring Have you not also heard and went on to quote other scripture that constructed a completely different (consolidated) conclusion. He taught us one cant pick and choose stand-alone excerpts from the bible without verifying them with the balance and consensus of everything else taught about the same subject. Not to believe that is to endorse another Ole Wives Tale.

This volume is a collection of tales of life histories of 26 elderly women from Ibiboland. It obtains a first-hand record of the pattern of life and banishes the myth of primitivity of the African by illustrating the complexity of conversational language of peasants and market women.
