In a compelling study of Indian women, Geraldine Forbes considers their recent history from the nineteenth century under colonial rule to the twentieth century after Independence. She begins with the reform movement, established by men to educate women, and demonstrates how education changed women s lives enabling them to take part in public life. Through their own accounts of their lives and activities, she documents the formation of their organisations, their participation in the struggle for freedom, their role in the colonial economy and the development of the women s movement in India since 1947.

Includes songs by Buddhist nuns, testimonies of medieval rebel poets and court historians, and the voices of more than 60 other writers of the 18th and 19th centuries. Among the diverse selections are a rare early essay by an untouchable woman; an account by the first feminist historian; and a selection from the first novel written in English by an Indian woman.

Education universally is considered as an instrument of empowerment. It makes everyone aware of human rights and gives voice to voiceless. Women being one of the vulnerable communities not only in India but across the globe can leverage the medium of education for their freedom. Indian history in this scenario leads the globe when in 1848 Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule opened school for girl’s education, which became first such initiative specifically for women education. In this backdrop researcher would try to peek into the educational policies which start from Wood’s despatch of 1854, till the recent NEP 2020.

This book explores the multifaceted obstacles to social change that India, Myanmar and Thailand face, and ways to overcome them. With a collection of essays that identify common challenges and salient features affecting diverse communities, this volume examines topics from subnational and local perspectives across the peripheries. The book argues that identity-based divisions have created a system of oppression and political contention that have led to conflicts of different kinds, and hence serving as the common cause of different social issues. At the same time, such issues have created space for marginalized groups around the world to call for change. The volume recognizes that social transformation comes into being through an active process of deconstructing and reconstructing shared norms and ideas. The contents in this book are thus centered around two focuses: the impacts of identities and grassroots. Both of these aspects are at the heart of each country’s transformations towards democracy, peace, justice, and freedom. Under this framework, the chapters cover a diverse range of common issues, such as, minority grievances, gender inequality, ethnic identity, grassroots power in alliance-making towards community peace, recovery and resilience, digital freedom, democracy assistance and communication, and bridging multiple divides. As identity-based cleavages are daily lived experiences for individuals and communities, it requires grassroots initiatives and alliances as well as democratic communication to tackle obstacles at the root. Ultimately, the book convinces readers that social transformations must begin at the individual to communal level and local to national level.

India and International Law, volume 2 examines India’s policy and practical approach to modern and emerging subjects such as energy, investment, sports, banking, biotechnology, taxation, water courses, feminism, air law and role of India in UN reforms. The most discussed interlinked issues of civilian nuclear energy and nuclear weapons are analysed in two separate chapters. This volume also examines legal challenges and offers possible solutions in the area of private international law, which hopefully would serve the purposes of relevant policy-makers, judiciary, common men and women and 2.5 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).India and International Law, volume 2 will enable the readers to realize the sheer magnitude of legal challenges faced by India, hence, one way forward is to consider some of the suggestions offered by the authors. It is hoped that these two volumes will provide a useful framework for similar studies and will remain a must source of consultation for those who are interested in India’s state practice on international law.

This volume of the Gazetteer of India was first published in 1965 and the public response has been very encouraging. Since then, major changes in the political map of India have taken place. The idea is to provide to the general public, especially the university students, low priced publications containing valuable, authentic and objective information on these subjects ( Physiography, People and Languages) by well-known experts in their respective fields.
