Workshop of the Holy Spirit invites students into the exciting adventure of theological education. Many aspects of modern theological education have their historic roots in the ideas of the Enlightenment. This foundation creates compartmentalized structures and frameworks that may not lead to the thriving of theological students. In contrast, Pietist leader P. J. Spener asserted in 1675 that theological schools should be “nurseries of the church” and “workshops of the Holy Spirit”—a formative environment that enhances intellectual, spiritual, and missional growth. Using the medieval workshop as a helpful metaphor for us today, and writing at the intersection of the student-faculty relationship, Strong and Bielman describe the components both in and out of the classroom that enhance fruitful ministry preparation. This book engages theological education in our changing religious context. It offers fresh questions for students, highlighting emerging, innovative, and alternative models of training for life in the Spirit. Each chapter contains relevant stories from theological education students, while including descriptions of the history of theological education.

William of Saint-Thierry (ca. 1080–1148) became abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Thierry in about 1119, holding that office for about sixteen years and writing a large number of works, some for the guidance of the monks of his abbey and others as theological treatises. But during that same time, after meeting Bernard, abbot of the Cistercian abbey of Clairvaux, he longed to become a Cistercian. He finally satisfied that dream in 1135, when he became a monk at Signy. His final work was the first of the five books that constitute the Vita Prima Sancti Bernardi. The nine chapters in this book explore William’s thought as represented in his twenty works, ranging from his earliest theological writing through his contribution to the Vita Prima Sancti Bernardi. The contributors to this volume have moved scholarship on William in new directions, ranging from a comparative analysis of Bernard’s and William’s thought through a study of William’s Christology, an analysis of individual works, a new translation of one of William’s little-known works, an examination of sixteenth-century images drawn from the Vita Prima, a study of William’s rhetorical skills, and a recognition of William’s new take on the phrase unitas spiritus. Dr. E. Rozanne Elder’s expertise as a scholar of the works of William of Saint-Thierry, combined with her decades of distinguished service as a professor of history, director of the Institute of Cistercian Studies and then of the Center for Cistercian and Monastic Studies, all at Western Michigan University, and as editorial director of Cistercian Publications for thirty-five years, has made her the best known of Cistercian scholars today. She is the one primarily responsible for moving Cistercian studies into the mainstream of medieval history and thought. As the gracious and indefatigable host of the annual Conference of Cistercian Studies that takes place each May as part of the International Medieval Studies Congress, she has created a community of scholars and friends.

What if the heavens were to open and, amid all the grandeur of God's Creation, you found yourself in a one-on-one conversation with God? Would you wonder if this was a dream? In what could have been a tragic accident, Jimmy, a precocious eleven-year-old boy, is about to experience the ultimate odyssey of a guided tour of the Creator's workshop. Jimmy, now a grown-up, shares his experience with kids by unlocking the secret inner workings of the gadgets they love and use every day. He does this in a special hands-on science clubhouse called My Father's Workshop. Unfortunately, many young people today cite science as the reason for not believing. For too long, these children have been the target of an agenda to remove God from their young lives, an agenda carried out by science education in our public schools. This brainwashing has mostly gone unchallenged, until now. My Father's Workshop is a truly original and tenderhearted story finely tuned to a child's faith and curiosity. It is an intricately-woven tapestry that combines the science of Genesis with God's perfect love and His plan for salvation. It is a Bible study and a science lesson rolled into one. Like many stories that have happy endings, you might want to keep some tissue handy for an occasional tear or two. Click on any of the links below to access this title's listings!
