Still it may be possible to disentangle from this struggle of armed nations over hundreds of miles some explicit narrative which may help all of us who are hungering for help and guidance. At present we do not authentically know even the subtle causes which produced this convulsion over half the world. What is on the surface is clear enough, but it is what is under the surface that matters. I am reluctant to believe in a diabolical and cold-blooded scheme to bring about war at this time; at least, this does not seem to be proved. We must, then, I think, suspend our judgment as to the real causes of war till time and documents give us the clue. Perhaps the pregnant word "mobilization" may explain much. Meanwhile we can only conjecture by the light of a few facts..." This volume is a comprehensive bibliographical and historiographical survey of the battle of Jutland, the major naval engagement of World War I. Rasor has incorporated all published books, monographs, official reports, dissertations, bibliographies, pertinent journals and periodicals, collections of unpublished personal papers, letters, diaries, manuscripts, and other materials. Sources appropriate to the background on the origins and consequences of the war, related events leading up to the battle, and associated aspects of the battle are included as well. In addition, the volume contains a glossary and an index. The volume is divided into two major sections. First, there is a narrative section divided into logical chapters and, second, an annotated bibliography in which more than 500 entries are provided. These are given, in most instances, in alphabetical order by author's last name. The narrative portion describes, evaluates, assesses, qualifies, and integrates all of the entries into a whole, making the battle more understandable from British, German, and other perspectives. Students of naval warfare at all levels should benefit from the book as a guide and a reference aid.

Using a narrative approach, Jutland 1916 - Twelve Hours that Decided the Great War tells the story of the Battle of Jutland, the greatest naval clash of the First World War. Drawing on a wealth of first-hand accounts, some of which were previously unknown, it weaves a highly original narrative, which intertwines original research, into a fast-paced account of the fighting. This is the only book on the battle to use a narrative thread to tell the story from both the British and German perspectives and will provide a fresh perspective on this decisive battle.
