Youth Civic Engagement In A Globalized World

In this book, the authors explore the apparent decline in youth civic engagement through research studies conducted in seven societies/nations with varied experiences with democracy. This work is framed within a youth civic engagement model. Each subsequent chapter presents the findings for each nation, along with contextual and historical discussions of citizenship education. This book explores the findings in Canada, England, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, and Mexico.

The World Youth Report is the flagship publication on youth issues of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. This 2015 edition intends to provide fresh perspective and innovative ideas on civic engagement and to serve as an impetus for dialogue and action. The objective of the Report is to provide a basis for policy discussions around youth civic engagement in order to ensure that young people are able to participate fully and effectively in all aspects of the societies in which they live. It comprises five chapters, with three sections respectively focusing on the economic, political and community-based engagement of youth, and a final chapter that offers key conclusions and recommendations.

This volume critically examines the multiple and contested meanings of ideal citizenship and reveal how children and youth craft active citizenship as they encounter and respond to the various institutions and organizations designed to encourage their civic and political development.

Contestations of Citizenship, Education, and Democracy in an Era of Global Change: Children and Youth in Diverse International Contexts considers the shifting social, political, economic, and educational structures shaping contemporary experiences, understandings, and practices of citizenship among children and youth in diverse international contexts. As such, this edited book examines the meaning of citizenship in an era defined by monumental global change. Chapters from across both the Global South and North consider emerging formations of citizenship and citizen identities among children and youth in formal and non-formal education contexts, as well as the social and civic imaginaries and practices to which children and youth engage, both in and outside of schools.
