Interest in chitin and chitosan continues to grow globally fueled in large measure by a surging interest in the newly explored biotechnological and enzyme engineering aspects of these biorenewable resources. Testimony to that interest is the continuation in the face of difficult economic times of the series of International Conferences on Chitin and Chitosan which has resulted in this volume. Further evidence comes from the expansion in national diversity among those who were in attendance. This enhanced interest also led to the formation of the American Chitoscience Society, the sponsoring organization for the conference. The 5th International Conference on Chitin and Chitosan was held October 17-20, 1991 in Princeton, NJ, U.S.A. It follows in the proud sequence which began with the 1st Conference in Cambridge, MA, U.S.A. in 1977, continued in Sapporo, Japan in 1982, then in Ancona, Italy in 1985 and once again in Trondheim, Norway in 1988. In spite of a recessionary world economy, the response to the 5th Conference was gratifying with presentations made over 4 days in 10 oral and 2 poster sessions. This volume contains 76 of those papers.

A natural long-chain polymer, chitin is the main component of the cell walls of fungi, the exoskeletons of arthropods (including crustaceans and insects), the radulas of mollusks, and the beaks and internal shells of cephalopods. However, marine crustacean shells are the primary sources of the chitin derivative chitosan. Chitin and chitosan are useful for various biological and biomedical applications, although they have been limited by poor solubility in the past. Current research focuses on increasing their solubility and bioactivity through molecular modifications. The resulting derivatives are receiving much attention for interesting properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxicity, that make them suitable for use in the biomedical field. Chitin and Chitosan Derivatives: Advances in Drug Discovery and Developments presents current research trends in the synthesis of chitin and chitosan derivatives, their biological activities, and their biomedical applications. Part I discusses basic information about the synthesis and characterization of a variety of derivatives, including the preparation of chitin nanofibers. Part II covers chitin and chitosan modifications as the basis for biological applications. It describes antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, anticoagulant, and antimicrobial activities. Part III addresses chemically modified and composite materials of chitin and chitosan derivatives for biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, nanomedicine, drug delivery, and wound dressing. The variety of these journals testifies to the interdisci plinary character of chitin studies. "Chitin" has really been a landmark, to use the definition given by Science, because it stimulated interest in the less known polysaccharides and in modified chitins, besides chitin itself, to the point that three International Conferences on Chitin / Chitosan were convened (Boston, U. S. A. 1977, Sapporo, Japan 1982 and Senigallia, Italy 1985). In convening the 3rd International Conference on Chitin / Chitosan (1-4 April 1985), one of the main objectives was the preparation of the present book. While the proceedings of the previous two Conferences were very valuable, they did not appear in any book catalogs and this severely Ii mi ted their distribution.
