Summary: Provides users of census data with a comprehensive reference document for the 1991 Census of Population and Housing. Definitions of terms and explanations of concepts relevant to census field collection, input processing and output production are included for the 1991 Census data; and advises of user seminars.

Codes and names of urban centres and localities (UC/Ls) defined for the 1991 Census. UC/Ls are part of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (AGSC), a hierarchically structured classification used by the ABS for the compilation and dissemination of statistics by geographic areas within Australia. Broadly an Urban Centre is a population cluster of 1,000 people or more, a Locality is a population cluster of between 200 to 999 people.

Counts of persons and dwellings at legal local government areas (LGAS), statistical divisions (SDs), statistical local areas (SLAs), statistical subdivisions (SSDs), and urban centres/localities (UC/Ls) with a time series comparing 1986 and 1991 census counts where possible. Includes maps showing statistical division and statistical local area boundaries. In this publication people are counted where they were located on census night, which may not have been where they usually live. All private dwellings were counted, whether occupied or unoccupied.
