War and its legacy are traumatic to individuals, communities, and landscapes. The impacts last long beyond the events themselves and shape lives and generations. Archaeology has a part to play in the recording of, and recovery from, such trauma. This volume delivers the first intensive archaeological survey of the battlefields of the Falklands War.

Many military accounts of the British side of the Falklands War have been published as well as memoirs written by servicemen who took part, so this aspect of the story of the Argentine occupation and the British liberation of this remote territory in the South Atlantic is well known. But little attention has been paid to the Falkland islanders who had direct personal experience of this extraordinary crisis in their history. That is why the previously unpublished diaries of Neville Bennett and his wife Valerie, a fireman and a nurse who lived with their two daughters in Port Stanley throughout the war, is such vivid and revealing reading. As chief fireman Neville was frequently called out to deal with fires and other incidents during the occupation, and each day he recorded what happened and what he thought about it in his sharp and forthright way. Valerie saw a different side of the occupation through her work at the Stanley hospital where she had to handle the Argentines as well as daily accidents and emergencies. Their joint record of the exceptional circumstances in the Falklands in April, May and June 1982 gives us a fascinating inside view of family life during the occupation and of their relations with the Argentine soldiers and commanders. It is engrossing reading.

Pink Ice tells the compelling story of the political struggles over Antarctica and the South Atlantic. It shows how Britain and Argentina have sought to invest these thinly populated spaces - composed mostly of ice, rock, and water - with cultural and national importance. The author, who has interviewed leading politicians and civil servants including Lord Carrington, Lord Owen, Lord Chalfont, Lord Hurd, and Lord Shackleton, demonstrates how political rivalries may be played out in other competitive arenas such as World Cup football. With the 20th anniversary of the Falklands War in 2002, Pink Ice provides a timely analysis of how territorial disputes simply refuse to fade away.

I stand at my open window. I feel like I'm on the edge of reality. April 1982. The Falkland Islands are invaded by Argentine forces. The shockwaves reverberate around the world. For some, it's overdue: seen in the gradual sweep to decolonise the world it is thought of as an inevitable next step. For others, the act strikes at the very heart of British identity. Falkland Sound tells the incredible story of a small community plunged into the middle of an international crisis. About half the size of Wales, populated by fewer than two thousand people, with conditions so hostile that trees struggle to grow, everyday life on these strange and beguiling islands is changed forever as two powerful nations fight for the right to claim sovereignty. Brad Birch's lyrical new play turns modern history into a theatrical epic, depicting a community and way of life turned upside down. Falkland Sound is a play about empire, community, and what it means to live in someone else's metaphor. This edition published to coincide with the world premiere at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon in August 2023.
