Excerpt from A Computer Program for the Prediction of Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity in Hydrocarbon Mixtures A summary of the calculation procedure to evaluate a viscosity or thermal conductivity is as follows. Input parameters are the critical temperature, volume, and pressure, the acentric factor and the ideal gas heat capacity and molecular weight of each component of the mixture of interest. These parameters for the reference fluid are required with an equation of state and some functional form for the viscosity and thermal conductivity for this reference fluid. This book is concerned with the prediction of thermodynamic and transport properties of gases and liquids. The prediction of such properties is essential for the solution of many problems encountered in chemical and process engineering as well as in other areas of science and technology. The book aims to present the best of those modern methods which are capable of practical application. It begins with basic scientific principles and formal results which are subsequently developed into practical methods of prediction. Numerous examples, supported by a suite of computer programmes, illustrate applications of the methods. The book is aimed primarily at the student market (for both undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses) but it will also be useful for those engaged in research and for chemical and process engineering professionals. In this report, we describe an extended corresponding states model for viscosity and thermal conductivity of mixtures implemented in version 8 of the NIST computer program REFPROP. The model is a modification of a one-fluid, extended corresponding states (ECS) model for thermal conductivity and viscosity originally developed by Ely and Hanley (Ind. Eng. Chem. Fundam., 1981, 20:323-332). We apply the model to selected mixtures representative of the fluids available in the NIST 23 database REFPROP (v8) such as refrigerants and natural gas constituent fluids, and present comparisons with experimental data. Comparisons are given for both gas, liquid, and supercritical conditions.
