Excerpt from A First Book in English for High Schools One of the reasons for the publication of A first book IN english is the belief On the part of the authors and the publishers that a better text of this kind is needed one that is thoroughly adapted to use in the majority of American high schools. To write such a book has been the purpose of the authors, who have brought to the work years of classroom experience in the teaching of English composition to pupils of the junior and the senior high school ages. Principles. Throughout the first book IN english the authors have kept clearly in mind the fundamental problems of English com position: (i) The problem of something to speak or write about; (2) the problems of gathering, evaluating, and organizing material; (3) the problems of expressing thoughts correctly, clearly, sincerely, and pleasingly; and (4) the problem of adapting what is spoken or written to a definite audience or to a definite body of readers. An ex amination of the lessons in this book will Show that these fundamentals have been made basic considerations. Nowhere in the book is there a discussion of the principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis as such. At the same time, the habit of ex pressing unified thoughts coherently and with emphasis is fixed through practice. The pupil learns to present unified, coherent, well-emphasized thoughts by learning through practice to express thoughts that he has first carefully selected, organized, and evaluated. The young pupil should not be confused with abstractions. He must learn by doing. Throughout the book the developing interests and abilities of boys and girls are carefully gauged and considered. Excerpt from First Year English for High Schools In regard to Chapter I, on oral composition, it may be stated that it was not the intention of the author to give an exhaustive summary of the work to be done along this line, but rather to suggest the kind of topics to be covered and the methods to be employed. The teacher should always bear in mind that no pupil can write until he has something to say, a fact which has been kept constantly in view in the presentation of the constructive work contained in this book. The author desires to acknowledge her indebted ness to certain of her friends whose suggestions and criticisms have been invaluable. Excerpt from High School English Book One The chapter on Conversations about Books seeks to ih dicate a method for classroom discussions about the books prescribed for the work in literature. The authors believe that reading for pleasure is the chief aim of the literature work, and that the books should therefore be discussed from this point of view. They believe that the class dis eussions should be familiar conversations confined to topics of interest to young people. They would therefore leave the minute analysis of books for style and structure to the fourth high school year or to the college class. Such mi unties, if admitted at all, should be purely incidental. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The First Year English Book It is based on a few simple i(deas of art and life. First, for children of high school age certainly the practice of the art of writing is not an end but a means.) It should lead not primarily to literary skill, but to development of general power and capacity) If this art is being practiced to that worthy end, there will be clear evidence of it. Natural exercise of innate power is pleasurable. Forced exercise of powers which are not ready for development is disagreeable, if not pain ful. Now self - expression, even expression by means of written words, is delightful to the pupil if his genuine powers are utilized. Interest and pleasure are merely the symptoms of normal development and healthful exercise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools The development of the Junior High School has brought about a need for certain changes in the organization and methods of presentation of the subject matter of the high school course. Simpler forms of statement, more extended drill, and the elimination or postponement of some topics which have 'been included in the elementary work of the four year high school are necessary in order to meet the needs of younger pupils. Such changes are especially impor tant in the study of foreign languages because of the fact that less time has been given for training in English and for gaining familiarity with the general principles of grammatical usage. In the case of a great many pupils Latin is the first for eign language to be studied. It should, therefore, be made as fully as possible an introduction to the general laws of language. Furthermore it should be presented in such a way as to reenforce the pupil's knowledge of the essential facts regarding the structure and grammatical usages of his own language. Often the inflections of the Latin sentence ele ments serve to make clear syntactical relations which have been vague to the pupil in his study of English and which must be understood by him before an intelligent use of his own language or of a foreign language is possible. Excerpt from The Teaching of High School English: June, 1914 Makers of high school courses of study and high school teachers have not been unmindful of these considerations. More of the pupils' time during the high school period is devoted to English than to any other subject, and this independent of the fact that every recitation is, in a sense, a recitation in English. In the large academic high schools there are more teachers of English than of any other subject. How far the results of the teaching justify the time and energy expended is not easily determined. It is not to be denied that results are not always what either the public or the teachers themselves could wish. In this connection there should be taken into account the forces at work outside of school which impair the results of English teaching, and which seriously handicap the work of teachers in this subject as the work of no other body of high school teachers is handicapped. Some of these forces are the prevailing low standards of spoken English in many homes and in many communities, the dislike of a large number of pupils for written composition of any sort, their inability to see the relation of good English to the practical affairs of the world, and the enormous amount of cheap periodical matter which the news stands offer in tempting colors or pictorial adornment to old and young alike.
