Excerpt from A Guide to the Duties and Responsibilities of Accredited Veterinarians Animal diseases cost livestock growers and the American economy an estimated 1 billion dollars a year. Much of this is preventable. But the manner of disease Spread is complex. If this burden ever is to be relieved, it will be only as a consequence of the cooperative efforts of the veterinary profession. Veterinary competence begins in college. It progresses through practice and training. For many years Federal regulatory agencies have relied on the ability and integrity of accredited veterinarians in the Cooperative control and eradication of livestock diseases. Most State and Federal regulations evidence this reliance by specifying that certain livestock movements may be made when certified by a full-time State or Federal veterinarian, or an accredited veterinarian. The propulsion of mankind into the jet-age, with foreign animal diseases only hours away, has accentuated dependence and cooperative needs. Accredited veterinarians who participate in cooperative animal health programs are not only protecting the livestock industry of the Nation, but adding to the well-being of mankind. This is a responsibility neither lightly given nor assumed. Graduate veterinarians who are interested in becoming accredited should contact the State Veterinarian or the Area Federal Veterinarian in-charge of disease control and eradication activities for the State in which accreditation is desired. Because accreditation in one State is not valid in another, an applicant wishing accreditation should contact the officials in each respective State.
