Excerpt from A History of Cumberland The time has gone past for writing a history of Cumberland, or of any county, on the old-fashioned lines and scale. The work is now subdivided; the fauna and the flora, the pedigrees and the geology, the ecclesiology, and the everything else, are dealt with by specialists in little books devoted exclusively to one subject. A few years ago one or two ponderous tomes supplied a country gentleman with all that was in print concerning his county, whereas nowadays a whole bookcase is required to house the more portable and numerous volumes that are in vogue. A guide to these volumes is required, and that the writer has endeavoured to supply for Cumberland in the classified list of books relating to that county which precedes the index. As to this volume itself, it is an attempt to discharge the functions of the "General Introduction" to an old-fashioned county history in two or three quarto volumes. How far the writer has succeeded it is not for him to say. Many monastic chartularies and other documents relating to Cumberland are still unprinted and unindexed. These the writer has done his best to consult, but until they are printed and indexed, he, or any other local writer, must expect in course of time to be set right on many points. Excerpt from The Army of the Cumberland The subject is too great a one to be fully and justly treated within the limitations, both of time and space, which have necessarily been imposed here. Still, with the hope that the future student of history may glean something of value in this volume not found elsewhere, it is sent forth for the favorable consideration of its readers. To the many friends who have kindly aided me in various ways, I return my sincere thanks. To Col. R. N. Scott, I am under special obligations for data furnished. Excerpt from The Dialect of Cumberland: With a Chapter on Its Place-Names The importance of our local dialects as a collateral aid in the study of the English tongue needs not now to be asserted. Without reference to those various forms of speech, out of which one has by dint of circumstances become crystalized in the standard tongue, the language can no more be clearly illustrated than it could be were we to omit to compare it with the cognate languages of Europe. The folk-speech of Cumberland has - thanks to the patriotic interest which her sons take in all that belongs to her - had a more ample share of recognition than generally falls to the lot of provincial dialects. Its humour and its pathos, its "canniness" - quaintness with a touch of cynicism - have been ably illustrated in prose, and its rhythmical qualities attested in verse, by the writers whose names appear on the subjoined list.
