On the other hand, the few briefer and simpler outlines extant can hardly be regarded as adequate to give the kind of preparatory training which is now being sought in many quarters. It would seem, therefore, that there is a place for a text-book which shall approach the subject matter of organic chemistry in much the same thorough but elementary fashion that we are wont to employ in laboratory manuals of inorganic chemistry. In other words, there is need of a course in general organic chemistry. It is hoped that this book may occupy a position and supply a demand of this character.
