It is substantially the translation of the Rev. Mr. Woods; but in the revision of the translation, great freedom has been used, especially in making such verbal changes as seemed to promote perspicuity and help the learner to an instant understanding of the author's mean ing. A translator who is not perfectly familiar with both the languages with which he has to do, is in danger of occasionally transferring a word from his dictionary to his page, without first submitting it to the scrutiny of his own thoughts; and where infelicities of expression arise from such a cause, they are more likely to catch the eye of a stranger than of the translator himself.
