So long as there is calamity in the world, any attempt to alleviate it cannot be unseasonable; and in the hope, that he might present to some at least of those, who are "in sorrow, trouble, need, sickness, or any other adversity," suitable aids for meditation and prayer, together with topics of scriptural consolation, the editor was induced to undertake the present little manual. It consists of two parts: viz.: - I. A Practical Essay on Affliction, including the Doctrine of the Holy Scriptures concerning the origin and design of afflictions; observations on the best preparation for afflictions and for the improvement of them, together with our duty on being delivered therefrom: and on the privilege and duty of prayer, especially in seasons of affliction.
