A Panorama Of Hungarian Mathematics In The Twentieth Century I

A glorious period of Hungarian mathematics started in 1900 when Lipót Fejér discovered the summability of Fourier series.This was followed by the discoveries of his disciples in Fourier analysis and in the theory of analytic functions. At the same time Frederic (Frigyes) Riesz created functional analysis and Alfred Haar gave the first example of wavelets. Later the topics investigated by Hungarian mathematicians broadened considerably, and included topology, operator theory, differential equations, probability, etc. The present volume, the first of two, presents some of the most remarkable results achieved in the twentieth century by Hungarians in analysis, geometry and stochastics. The book is accessible to anyone with a minimum knowledge of mathematics. It is supplemented with an essay on the history of Hungary in the twentieth century and biographies of those mathematicians who are no longer active. A list of all persons referred to in the chapters concludes the volume.

The book presents the history of ICMI trough a prosopographical approach. In other words, it pays a lot of attention to the actors of the International movement. The portraits of the members of the ICMI Central Committees (1908-1936) and ICMI Executive Committees (1952-2008), and other eminent figures in ICMI history, who have passed away in the first 100 years of its life, are the guiding thread of the volume. Each portrait includes: · Biographical information · An outline of the various contributions made by the individual in question to the study of problems pertaining to mathematics teaching/education · Primary bibliography · Secondary with particular attention to the publications concerning the teaching of mathematics · Images: photos, book frontispieces, relevant manuscripts The authors of the portraits (30 altogether) are researchers in the history of mathematics, mathematics, and mathematics education. The focus on the officer’s role within ICMI and on his/her contributions to mathematics education, make the portraits different from usual biographies. In particular, since most officers were active mathematicians, the portraits shed light on aspects of their lesser-known activity. Connecting chapters place the action of these figures in the historical context and in the different phases of ICMI history.

This book was first published in 1970 and reprinted four years later, but since then it has sold out. The helpful comments of my colleagues have strengthened my con viction that some changes and corrections were to be done in the third edition. These are summarized below, supplementing a nearly unaltered part of the piace to the original edition. Any work on the history of science spanning a considerably long period of time has to satisfy a great number of criteria as the discipline under scrutiny has to be examined as it evolved, embedded in the intricate network of relations in the national and universal history of culture. Ta compound the problem, the rise of mathematics out of backwardness in Hungary was fraught with relapses instead of leading in a straight line to today's heights. To begin with, the author of a book on science history encounters the problem of what material to include and how to treat it. To stretch the point a little, one might say that as many authors and reviewers, as many opinions. It is almost impossible to coordinate all the divergent points of view and expectations.

This collection presents significant contributions from an international network project on mathematical cultures, including essays from leading scholars in the history and philosophy of mathematics and mathematics education.​ Mathematics has universal standards of validity. Nevertheless, there are local styles in mathematical research and teaching, and great variation in the place of mathematics in the larger cultures that mathematical practitioners belong to. The reflections on mathematical cultures collected in this book are of interest to mathematicians, philosophers, historians, sociologists, cognitive scientists and mathematics educators.

This textbook and treatise begins with classical real variables, develops the Lebesgue theory abstractly and for Euclidean space, and analyzes the structure of measures. The authors' vision of modern real analysis is seen in their fascinating historical commentary and perspectives with other fields.
