Excerpt from The American Phonetic Dictionary of the English Language: Adapted to the Present State of Literature and Science; With Pronouncing Vocabularies of Classical, Scriptural, and Geographical Names The foreigner will be enabled, by the aid of this Dictionary, to pronounce any word he may see in the common print, and read correctly the definition; which cannot be said of any other English dictionary. This peculiar feature of the work will commend itself to the missionary, who now finds it almost impossible to teach the foreigner our language. Excerpt from An Etymological Dictionary of the English Language Owing to the large number of corrections which the use of the newer method renders imperative, I took the opportunity, in 1901, of printing an entirely new edition of my Concise Etymological Dictionary, first issued in 1882, and partially corrected in four later editions the result being that the edition of 1901 entirely supersedes all that preceded it. Excerpt from A Phonographic and Pronouncing Vocabulary of the English Language In deciding between two or more pronunciations, countenanced by orthoepists, or by unwritten respectable usage, that one has been chosen which, when expressed by the English Phonetic Alphabet, makes the nearest approach to the romanic spelling. In this the author has been actuated by a conviction that the written English language is now in a transition state, passing from the romanic to a phonetic orthography; and he acknowledges no other right in these matters than prescription. In unaccented syllables that are supposed to be pronounced in different ways by different persons, he has preferred to abide by romanic usage. In this no offence will be given except to extremists, whose views, if adopted, would give offence to all but them selves. To attempt to disturb the established orthography on points about which orthoepists themselves differ in opinion, would be highly injurious to the interests of Phonetic Spelling. Excerpt from A Critical Pronouncing Dictionary, and Expositor of the English Language The last writer on this subject is Mr. Nam, who, in his Elements of Orthoepy, has shown a clearness of method and an extent of olmervalim which deserve the highest encomiums. Liis Preface alone proves him an elegant writer, as well as a philosophical observer of Language; and his Alphabetical ladcx, referring near five thousand words to the rules for pronouncing them, is a new and useful method of treating the subject; but he seems, on any one, to have mistaken the best usage, and to have paid too little attention to the first principles of pronunciation. Excerpt from Etymological and Pronouncing Dictionary of the English Language: Including a Very Copious Selection of Scientific Terms for Use in Schools and Colleges and as a Book of General Reference The Pronunciation - The Dictionary words, for pronunciation, are respelt phonetically with italic letters, and divided into syllables by dots instead of hyphens, and accented. The pronunciation has been carefully revised, in conformity with the best modern usage, by the Rev. P. H.'phelp, M. A. Cantab., to whom the Author has also to acknowledge his great Obligations for very valuable assistance he has afforded in other departments of the work. The scheme of phonotypes or sound-symbols is fully detailed in a Table at the beginning Of the work, and again briefly repeated, for the con venience of reference, at the bottom of each two consecutive pages. The leading word of each group is uniformly respelt and marked in full; but the succeeding ones, especially when the seat of the accent is the same.
